Ideal rig for overclocking a Opteron 144

best is subjective.. The most popular seems to be the DFI SLI boards.. They certainly have the best reputation although IMO especially on opty's the Asus Crossfire boards is a good choice... but if your into hardcore getting max out overclocking the DFI is probably the way to go.

Ram wise - IMO Geil Value is more than fine. Far better quality in my experience than the Value name suggests and most definatly overclockable.

I know this maybe should be in the overclocking forum but what is the ideal ram.

At the moment all i have is 1 GB of 3200 Geil RAM. For the Opteron to reach the 3Ghz i'll assume i'll need something like 4800 to avoid a bottle neck?

nah you can run a divider on the memory so 3200/4000 will be ok. its what most people run afaik.
Ideally yes, however with my system I cannot run my memory on a divider as it leads to a non booting system.

So to make sure you can run the Opty 144 at 2700Mhz you need to buy memory that can do 300Mhz at least which means pretty fast/expensive memory like PC4800 or memory that is known to overclock to 300Mhz

Hopefully if i buy one of those new Dfi Lan Party's (£152) i shouldn't have that problem.

Indeed and works fine for most people :). Geil Value ram will take to some overclocking, I was actually, for a time, running my 2gig @ 220 with what I didn't realise was slightly faster timings than specced.

Don't worry about the RAM.

DO NOT spend too much. Concentrate on getting the CPU clock as high as possible.

EDIT - I'd just keep your existing RAM.

Get a DFI Ultra D (or an SLI variant if you want SLI). Flash it to the 623-3 BIOS.

Test your RAM out (ideally, you want low timing RAM, and that's about it), then keep it around that speed using dividers.

Clock the CPU up as high as it will go.

Enjoy :D

Another thing to remember, is that the more RAM you have, the more you will limit the CPU overclock (assuming other factors like voltage and temperature don't limit you first).

ie a 939 chip will clock highest with 2 x 256MB sticks, maybe 100 Mhz less with 2 x 512MB sticks and maybe another 100 Mhz less with 2 x 512MB sticks.

Thanks peeps, i've got a Cab2e so hopefully i might get it to 2.7 with a bit of luck.

Should be doable. I think mine did that on default voltage, albeit with watercooling, but that won't make much difference at default volts.

2.8 needed a nudge and 2.9 needed a bugger nudge :D
