right, im driving soon.. :D cant wait - anyway life story over

just wondering what peoples ideas for a first car is, i really like a Vectra or something but there out of my price range (initial costs and running costs i imagine) so its obviously going to have to be something a bit smaller.. now i have ZERO intention of becoming a 'boy' racer :) but that's not to say i wouldn't want a nice lil nippy car, so i've been thinking something like a 1600cc golf gti mk2 with twin carb - will cost a lil bit to get a mk2 in any sorta good condition but i could live with that. All the normal things have fun through my head eg, saxo, 306, punto etc etc but none of them appeal - just wondering if anyone can think of anything i ain't thought of :)

Lovely looking one on eBay at the moment for 800 quid with full T&T, is still a 1500 FWD as well (mine WAS a FWD but had a 160BHP rear-drive powertrain instead!)

Yeees, here:

Take the Sprint wheels off though. That shouldn't work and there's something dodgy going on there (some dubious home made spacer, no doubt)

I like the plate as well :o

any budget? are you paying for both or are the parents paying for one chunk; either insurance or the car?

i would be paying the lot - budget - well to be honest i would consider anything upto about 2k if it was a reallly nice car with a lot of life left in it - however would aim more around the 1-1.2k sorta mark? hope im not being to unrealistic, its just insurance that bugs me, i dont mind saving up and shelling out for a car - but id rather not be paying crap loads on insurance :(

hehe well now you can see why im a bit stuck for ideas, such a low budget :( currently considering buying a run about 6month mot / tax jobbie and save up a few grand for something really posh..

Judging from insurance based posts by young drivers you'll be very lucky if you don't have to shell out £1-1.5k on your first years insurance which will severely limit your budget for the car.

Assuming £500 then it's going to be a case of finding a car based on its practical merrits (i.e. the boring stuff, what condition it's in, tax, MOT). Things like Peogeot 405s and Mk1 Mondeos spring to mind but there's also cars like old Volvos that go on forever and are generally well looked after. At the other end of the spectrum are things like Fiestas but due to their size and popularity with new drivers and people on a tight budget they do tend to attract a slight premium and will also have much less kit.

 jesus, i had under predicted how much insurance was gonna cost (took my mums average figure and added some on). Since im going to be at home for a while (just while i get myself sorted job wise, car wise, and get a tiny bit of cash behind me) i figure i can afford to save up a vast amount of all my money and put it towards a car.. whats the insurance difference cost wise (obviously very roughly) between getting some little 1.2-1.6ltr hatchback and a bigger, older estate or something? obviously it is very subjective, but i would really like a vectra estate or something similar but have always *assumed* insurance is twofold that of something smaller. am i correct? or ?

Don't know the details as (thankfully) I'm now old enough to get ripped off by insurance companys on performance cars but from others have posted larger cars can often have similar insurance costs to smaller cars as whilst their insurance groups are higher they have a grandad image so are less likely to be stolen or crashed.

Sure that at a more sensible hour a few people can give examples.

on a golf gti you would be paying closer to 2k for insurance i would have thought, I currently pay 1053 for my 1.4 litre rover and i live in a really good postcode area and that was the very cheapest available
