Hi,

I/we would appreciate some help with regards to building a pc please:):)

My son has managed to save £747. We'd like to build it (first timers:D) and we don't need a monitor as we have a Dell 23in S2309W.

I use a Powermac G5 and my knowledge of PC's is limited;) , but saying that we would like to go for an Intel chip and an ATI 4870 or 4850.

We would also like to attempt overclocking:D:D, so hopefully you can take that into consideration also.

Looking forward to hearing your knowledable thoughts, with thanks,

Stoutmeister:)and Son:)

Well here's my effort

edit: ah cocks, I forgot the optical drive.

if you need to shave some money off (for the optical drive, keyboard and mouse etc) you can get rid of the 1tb samsung drive, I just put that in there for extra storage. Plan was to have the OS programmes and games on the 320gb, and the rest on the 1tb, but if you don't have many pictures/music/films etc then you don't need the extra drive.

Oh, sorry I forgot that. We have an OS from our dead laptop. The keyboard and mouse I'll get that for him seperately:)

Also, we'd like to gor for the Antec 300 (better air circulation/more room?). Games to run on it COD series, Battle of Britain, World in Conflict etc. apps would be Photo and video editing.

Sorry for the slip-up.

Worth going for a quadcore if you're photo and video editing.

Hmm yeah I thought this after he mentioned it. You can just swap out that E8500 in my spec for a Q6700 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-155-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567
It's cheaper too =]

Your performance in games won't be as good (because you won't get the ~4ghz that you would from the E8500, but multi tasking and encoding will be faster. You should be able to get 3.2+ out of that Q6700 without much trouble.

Thanks for the swift replies:)...I'm afraid when it comes to the differing cores I become completely unstuck:confused:

Hmmm, well basically when we talk about dual or quad cores, we mean that the processor contains two or four processing cores - so when you put it in your machine you essentially have a two or four processor machine. Not all software takes advantage of two cores, and even less takes advantage of four, but graphics and video editing will benefit from more available threads.

I know Adobe CS4 for example can use a quad core pretty well :)

Like the sound of the extra drives, I initially thought you had a raid set-up in mind;)

Stoutmeister:)

You need two identical drives for a RAID setup ;) you could use two 320gb F1 drives if you choose to go for the Q6700

having 4 cores as opposed to two makes the cpu able to do two more things (threads) at once, as opposed to doing two then two more. This makes it better for multi-tasking, for example if you are running Microsoft word and itunes at the same time, word will get a core, and itunes will get a core, so they can each do their tasks at the same time, they don't have to wait for eachother. (that is of course simplified)

Some things can use more than one core at the same time, for example encoding video can use all of your cores, with different cores doing different things at the same time, this speeds up the process.

Most games use either one or two cores, only a few use four, so having a faster clocked dual core will give you higher FPS (on a quad core, two cores wouldn't be used by the game.

Well heres my idea, quad core for the encoding ect, 4gb ram, decent graphics, decent motherboard for the money, operating system harddrive and a tb storage, decent case with extra 120mm fans optional, don't think ive missed anything, leaves you £100 for mouse/keyboard/speakers ect
