Hi all,

I have just managed to finish the Discworld series and all other books by Sir Terry Pratchett, and i am after ideas on what to read next?
It's a tall order finding anyone that writes close to Pratchett but i am open to suggestions.
Also is their any series of books out there that is set in its own universe e.g. the Discworld series, one of the best things about that was the numerous books all connected together in its own world.

I have read the Lord of the Rings, Stephen Kings Dark Tower collection and Hitchhikers.

Thanks in advance.

Well yes there are a lot of books set in their own connected universes. If you want humour like Pratchett then good luck, he was unique. I'd recommend the Murderbot series by Martha Wells though. Different sort of humour but I love it and it's critically acclaimed.

Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials and Book of Dust (reading first volume of this series now) are worth a look.

I went from pratchett to Simon R Green... Read all the deathstalkers novels and loved the nightside series... Not a fan of his latest works though...
Also can recommend Gemmell as well...

Neil Gaiman worked with Terry Pratchett a bit, though his style is a bit different. Have you read Good Omens, which they wrote together?

I'm on book 4 of this.
It's an alright read so far.

Also, if you haven't then get your chops into this.

Thanks for the suggestions, so much choice.

Decided to order All systems red by Martha Wells in the end, see how i go with the first one.

Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson, it has an interesting "magic" system

Book 1 is 99p on Kindle at the moment - The Final Empire

Currently reading book 7

I do like Gemmell as a more basic swords and fantasy style book

Have you read The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series?

Also for humour and these aren't entirely fiction, but perhaps embellished, but I've always enjoyed David Sedaris' books, especially Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim.

I agree with the Gemmell choice, some excellent characters in there, Druss being one of em :D

I imagine Gemmell is similar to Joe Abercrombie?

Heroic fantasy. Lots of battle scenes.

Although from reading the synopsis of some of Gemmell's books they seem more on the fantasy side (magic) whilst Abercrombie is more medieval (less magic and more sword and cavalry)

A Few historical series whuch i liked:
The Flashman books- by George McDonald Fraser- very funny and meticulously researched history. You don't have to read these in order.
Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe books
Bernard Cornwell's Warlord arthurian legend books- my favourites
The Hornblower books by CM Forster
