Ideas for using a desktop at a distance, e.g. from a cupboard?

I have a big, ugly, noisy case under my desk. Complete with wires hanging out. I'd like to move it far away, perhaps into another room, maybe into a cupboard. What're the options?

1/ Get extension cables, run them to my desk. USB is good for 5m iirc, hdmi probably further. This will work until I fall over the cables, so maybe laying them under carpet would work.

2/ I try to route everything over ethernet and run a cat5e cable. Maybe even try my not-quite-reliable homeplugs. This relies on hdmi or vga over ethernet being a real thing. Is it?

3/ Buy a small computer, screw it to the back of a monitor and try gaming over remote desktop. I don't think that would work, but it might.

4/ Some other, better plan. Not clear on details

What should I do? Ideas?

No chance of upgrading it I take?

If your willing to buy a new small computer for your monitor, why not just upgrade to a quieter spec?

I have plans of upgrading it to a louder, hotter spec. Which if anything makes the cupboard more attractive. The thin client idea doesn't need much in the way of speed so would be cheap.

Wireless probably works for the mouse/keyboard. Is it an option for usb sticks / video signals?

Wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse would probably work fine, as for video, im not sure.

Just had a quite google and found a hdmi transmitter and receiver kit, but i have no idea how well it works and if its worth the £120...

I would say your best bet is just a long extension from your Pc to your monitor via HDMI. With a multi USB hub.

If you can tuck it down the wall without it being noticeable.

Google tells me that hdmi over ip exists for about £100. Having trouble finding out how well it works though. Hdmi over wifi probably doesn't work. Long wires under carpet looks like the best idea at present then. Not pretty, but quite cheap.

How far are you wanting to move the PC? I have 5m DVI leads between my PC and monitors, and use a wireless keyboard and mouse. Suits my needs fine!

Ive seen people build computers in filing cabinets and cupboards, so that could be an interesting option for you :)
