Ideas on cost to replace A Class auto box at Merc dealer?

My godmother has just rung asking me to sort out a hire car for her. Her Y reg A Class auto 'box has died on her.

She took it to a Merc dealership and on the test run it broke down and died good and proper.

Any ideas what the cost is likely to be? Its in the dealers and it won't be going anywhere else. So its Merc labour charges on top of the auto box.

Would it be at all likely that its written off. Think its 100K plus and its been pretty abused.

No chance of a write off I wouldnt think, as your insurance company do not cover mechanical issues like this so have no interest in writing it off.

Well over 1k i would think, sell it for spares or take it to a non Merc dealer!

Initial quote £2.5K fitted. £1.5K for the box and £1K labour (2 days)

Take it to an auto specialist, and/or have a second hand box fitted

jump on the roof a cuople of times and then call the cops in the morning saying you came out to it like that....

definitely take it to a specialist. might be able to get a good recon box, would be cheaper to buy and no doubt cheaper to fit (being a specialist rather than a main stealer)
