Identify this spider

You say harmless but people sometimes react badly to bites from house spiders, as for me, the risk of inducing a heart attack out of fear is always strong so certainly not harmless :p

:D

When I was younger if I saw a spider scurry away, I'd hunt it down and kill it with extreme prejudice. These days however, if I see a spider scurry away, I let it get on with it, so long as I can't see it, I'm happy to let it get on with eating beasties in my house. So long as it stays out of sight and doesn't taunt me, we'll get on just fine :)

Same. But unfortunately my kids always insist on it being dealt with. My wife will kill it so they come to me first knowing I will spend half an hour hunting it down, trapping it and putting it outside (no doubt it finds a way back in again).

SHE and I say she, because she's likely to be laying eggs in brood chamber then wrapping it all up. The males tend to be all legs and not much else (no trousers?). She is a lovely spider who has done her work eating all those nasty flies, wasps etc, female giant house spiders like our stuff because it makes for excellent trapping. Usually found near windows or sheds or areas of Human action. They have realised like dogs and cats, humans pave the way to moving their genetics on. People who are scared of spiders are a bit dull, certainly with our spiders, they'll never attack unless you try and take them from their eggsack, usually they do a great job, I've had one in my shed maybe 6 or 7 years, always takes wasps I swat at the window who bounce off and get stuck.. Out comes the boss, even with a stinger they have no chance.. oh and she's a big momma!
