This may be one for the PC forum, but since I want to easily identify the codecs on some of the family vids I've converted to DivX in the past and then play on the 360, maybe not. Of course if the mods want to move it, who am I to argue.

I used to have a little util that told me (in simple terms) what codec a file was. Does anyone have a good freeware program I can use to do this and easily identify when a file will play ok? I've used tons of different codecs to encode over the years, and it's getting annoying seeing if they'll play via trial and error.

Interestingly I've already got that, and one of my vids says this in the codec/audio information: -

Video: dvsd
Audio: PCM Audio

This doesn't play...

Another says: -

Video: DX50
Audio: 0x0055 MPEG-1 Layer 3

And this does.

What combination of video/audio will play - is there a link to a definitive list?

I'm assuming that anything that says XVid or DXnn/divx in video will play

Thanks. I've still got a number of files that I'm convinced are ok, but don't play but at least anything I convert in the future should be ok.
