Hi,

I am attempting to replace the washers in a mixer tap. All the online tutorials show the tap handle coming off "in a oner" revealing the headgear which can be removed as the next step.

However, when I removed the tap handle I have this rubber spool thing sitting on top of the headgear which I can't work out how to remove so I can get to the nut to remove said headgear.

I can't fit an adjustable spanner inside there, but it looks like the inside of the top of the black thing is hexagonal like there is some (to me) mysterious wrench that will do the job...only the cap is just rubber so I have no idea how that could work. The part around the nut is round too. I have tried twisting the thing off, and pulling it...no dice.

edit: I just realised that the hexagonal shape of the inside of the cap is so the tap handle can turn it.

Have any of you encountered this? Please help a simpleton stumble his way through this simple DIY task.

TIA

I dont have any experience with this type of tap, but I would expect the black part to pull off revealing the valve.

The top of the valve is the circular ridged part that you can see with the screw thread in the middle. And so I would expect the black part pulls off bringing the brass hexagonal nut (ridged on the inside to mate with the valve) with it.

OK...thanks for the reply - so, bearing in mind that the black part is rubber/plastic and can't really be pried from underneath or mole gripped, what's the best way of getting the thing off?

Update: the other one just pulled off using zero tools...the first one I tried (not pictured) is a bit corroded/green...I suppose that's why it seemed that there was no way to get the thing off.

Any tips for loosening it? Does WD40 work on brass?
