Had several delivery companies do this / usual postman sometimes does this.

Did he leave it the morning the bin was emptied? Did you just not check the mail?

My postie has down something similar to this in the past.

He would leave parcels in one of our recycling bins and leave a note. Quite foolish really! Lucky when he did this it wasn't on a collection day.

He doesn't do this any more and instead uses the recycling bin lid as cover against the house for parcels! Sneaky yet effective.
