Idiot proof Linux

I Have no experience of Linux, but would like to try running BOINC on a 64bit OS.

Can’t afford XPx64 or Vista

so can any body suggest a free version of linux that runs 64bit

will communicate with my other rigs via gigabit LAN running XP pro 32bit

and above all is idiot proof.

The rig only runs BOINC so has no other applications installed.
