I Have no experience of Linux, but would like to try running BOINC on a 64bit OS.

Can’t afford XPx64 or Vista

so can any body suggest a free version of linux that runs 64bit

will communicate with my other rigs via gigabit LAN running XP pro 32bit

and above all is idiot proof.

The rig only runs BOINC so has no other applications installed.

Yeh go for Ubuntu, I don't have much Linux experience. But I have always found Ubuntu the easiest to install and use. Currently running it in VMware my self on my MacBook as I fancy messing around with Linux again.

Agreed - ubuntu's probably your best option. I've been running it for the past few days on my laptop and I'm quite impressed with it. As a linux newb I've had no problems using it and as far as I can tell it seems quite idiot proof.

How about Ubuntu.... oh, I see the others beat me to it ;)

I don't think that Ubuntu is necessarily easier to use than other distros, however, the online support is superior, imo.

If you're just running distributed computing on it then a GUI is just wasting processing power, install a CLI only. It's really not that hard to get a single program installed and working (particularly something with quite so many how-to's out there.
