Id go with Arctic Silver Ceramique like someone else mentioned. put a bit more than normal on just in case, might cos you a couple of degrees by using too much, but not the end of the world.
The Gelid paste worked well for me. It recommends in the instructions that you apply it to both the CPU and heatsink and spread it with the spatula. That way you are pretty much guaranteed coverage. As the others here have said, it does not matter if you overapply. It will just squeeze out of the sides. As long as you take antistatic precautions you should be ok just wiping any excess off with a microfiber cloth.
The other option might be to see if a forum member lives near-by, I'm sure for a few bottles of beer they will come and help you out?
