Idiotic conversations on Discord

I've recently joined a few servers on Discord and I'm rather depressed at the quality of conversation. The level of chat is pretty much consistently poor and infantile - clichéd comments and hackneyed colloquialisms, 1,000 different types of emoticons, gifs, memes and 'funny' videos. I don't think I've even smiled once.

It doesn't matter which server I go to, they're pretty much all the same. Is it all like this or have I just joined the wrong places? Is there an intellectual hive of proper discussion going on somewhere there that I've missed? Does the technology encourage this type of communication?

I don't use it often but when I do, the music discords I'm a part of are all very cordial and intelligent, even the gaming ones aren't meme generators most of the time, maybe you're just choosing or being attracted to that type of discord ?

I think it mostly depends on the discord. I'm in a number of them and some are definately better than others.

Ones for Twitch streamers for example, will be a continuation of their chat - so probably full of memes and edgelords and all sorts of people all ages. Dedicated help discords for modpacks for complex games will probably attract people similarly minded and it'll be more chill in that regards.

Stock bot discords are just hell.

OK that's very encouraging to hear. I've just been unlucky with my choice of servers then. I did follow a couple over from Twitch and then the rest I found on Disboard. Good to know that there are some decent ones out there somewhere.

I haven't really used discord outside of private servers with friends, pretty much just for voice chat whilst gaming.

From the looks of it, I guess in a lot of ways it works kind of like a more up to date IRC - if that is the case, i'd expect private / member only type groups to be where you'd find a decent level of sensible conversation, anything public will largely be a complete mess.

Depends largely on the subject/context. Some i've found to be mature and helpful, others (usually gaming related) utterly childish.

And some just have @Ace Modder spreading his filth :p

Depends on the discord? The specialst ones I'm seem pretty much ok the others are just basically general chatter like you'd find down the pub not exactly intellectually stimulating but if you're looking for company...

Your average sub reddit is drivel in my experience but then again maybe its just the channels I sometimes visit and quit not long after.

It's just for a bit of fun. Discord isn't to be serious.
