Newsgroups used to be the place I suppose. SC is a cesspit of circle jerks from either side of any argument so that's out.

If you want a serious discussion you just say you want a serious discussion. In the Discord if someone wants to be intelligent they can be. It usually spurs a discussion off when someone says "lets all be serious now".

I've recently joined a few servers on Discord and I'm rather depressed at the quality of conversation. The level of chat is pretty much consistently poor and infantile - clichéd comments and hackneyed colloquialisms, 1,000 different types of emoticons, gifs, memes and 'funny' videos. I don't think I've even smiled once.

It doesn't matter which server I go to, they're pretty much all the same. Is it all like this or have I just joined the wrong places? Is there an intellectual hive of proper discussion going on somewhere there that I've missed? Does the technology encourage this type of communication?

Whatever you do don't join the underground unofficial secret ocuk gaming discord. No idea if it's still about as it's not in my list any more but there was a mass exodus from the unofficial ocuk gaming discord due to the mods pandering to the snow flakes who didn't get the banter.

The more focused ones are better aye. It really does depend on the group/source/whoever or whatever owns the channel/is used for i.e. I'm regularly in a couple of gaming channels but they're a sideline from a major gaming site and they're quite focused and well moderated thats worth a visit, a couple others are where mod authors hang out so again quite focused on technical discussion. General chat sites/channels just tend to be garbage, memes and general trash posting.
