Hi there,

First of all, apologies for my cluelessness, ive never done anything like this before and I really dont know where to start.

Basically, I want to install the phpBB forum software onto my hosting. My hosting fully supports all of the requirements listed on phpBB homepage. Ive spent hours trying to follow the packaged installation file to no avail. Ive googled for help and asked on other forums to no success!

Can anyone provide me with an idiots guide to installing the software?

Thanks.

Which bit are you getting stuck on?

-edit-

Have you look at the options your hosting provides? A couple of the companies I use allow you to install phpBB through their control panels.

Im just stuck generally really, I just need something that I can follow from start to finish aimed at a complete beginner that I can follow with ease. My hosting is with www.vidahost.com , I can install yaBB through cPanel but its not really what I want.

I thought the instructions on the phpbb site were pretty straightforward myself, but post what bit you're stuck on here, if that's not the case!

After a bit more searching, I just downloaded Filezilla as a new FTP client, and voila, ive got the web based installation page in front of me! Did that in about 2 mins! *smacks forehead*

Beofre you get it installed and fully customised I would seriously consider switching to SMF as apposed to phpBB. I used phpBB for about 3 years and always had problems upgrading it etc and got hacked as a result of not upgrading it properly.

SMF has an automatic upgrade facility via the admin console and is generally a lot easier to use and manage.

i disagree. i've been using many different boards for nearly a decade, and in my opinion phpBB is the best all-rounder. also, phpbb2 will soon be changing to phpbb3, and having tested the beta version i can assure you it wee's all over smf.
