Our cat has been missing for roughly a year. He was gone for a period of 3 months before this, before the vets gave us a call saying they had him and we should come and collect him.

Now, naturally, I'd assumed someone else was feeding him because he had gotten a fair amount bigger.

Today, out of the blue, I get a call from a foreign student at Marjons (university up the road) saying, in a calm manner, that she has my cat and "he always comes here" but he is suffering from worms and they don't know what to do.

What the hell?! They're asking me for advice on how to care for my cat that they have, for all intents and purposes, taken.

Rant over.

maybe they just thought you always let them out and theyve been wandering up to the students place, it doesnt mean theyve pinched your cat

This would annoy me no end. People don't seem to realize what kind of worry, upset and stress they cause pet owners when they allow other peoples pets into their own homes and then feed them. I can just imagine some silly student cooing and fussing over a cat whilst the owner is going out of his mind with worry. Probably sticking up posters and wandering the streets in search for their pet whilst the clueless student thinks they are doing a good deed.

So the cat keeps visiting them, they noticed it had worms and thought they would let you know?

Unless they have been preventing it from returning to you I don't see what's so wrong with that.

Cat owners will not see it that way. They're just overcome with worry about the big bad students catnapping their widdle Mr. Tiddles.
