Well it was a bit chilly this morning so the minibus got fired up at 7:17 and finally driven off at 8:09. 52 minutes, a new record Oh and for context he was back at 8:49 so that was 52 minutes of idling for 40 minutes of driving.

Worst "I just bought an expensive EV" thread so far.....

You might have a point... if I owned an EV.

What salt? You made a comment that didn't match my personal experience. I queried it, supported by things I am aware of. But as I haven't bought a car with an diesel powered parking heater since 2016 the regulations may well have changed and I didn't know about it. No salt intended from my side.

There does seem to be a lot of perceived negativity on the boards these days. Too much lockdown maybe?

When I worked on the home shopping department at Asda, the delivery vans used to get turned on for 2 hours before heading out on the first delivery runs so they could be loaded and the items were kept chilled / frozen.

I know it's obviously done for a purpose but I always though they should have been designed with a plug in option so that they could be connected to mains electricity before setting off. Loading an idling van with 9 other vans all idling around you was not a nice start to my day at 5am.

An neighbour of mine before we moved used to idle for 15-20 mins in his old Japanese car before setting off for work. It had a droning aftermarket exhaust and he'd set the idle to over 1000rpm because he thought it made the car sound cool. We could hear the din on the other side of our flat.

We used to call him "Car startin' Martin".

Get in and drive it down the road, they won't do it again.

I did that with a friend's car once. .
He was notorious for going into a shop and leaving his car running.
I came past, jumped in and drive round the corner with him giving chase.
Stopped about 100 yards later for him.
He learnt the error of his ways.

He only had the car a few months and i think he realised that he would miss it if stolen.

I see quite a few when I'm picking my son up from nursery, I'm sure some of them must disable stop start (I have in my car, but as its a 4l v8, and I'm rarely in traffic it's pointless).

I warm my car up 5 minutes on cold mornings 100% of the time because I don't want to be screwing my engine up especially on a rotary so, hey ho, everyone to their own! It's got nothing to do with warming inthe interior, it's got to do with warming the oil up in the engine. For me, I feel more comfortable knowing it's all good.

Same. I tend to warm up a few mins esp in winter and the journey is likely to be short. I'm sure the sound a C63 V8 isn't the nicest for the neighbors but thankfully I don't usually leave until about about 8.45.

Hate to break it to you, but im guessing it's an RX8 the OMP runs at its lowest during idle, your much better driving it at low revs. The slower a rotary goes as well the poorer the apex seals work.
So by idling from cold your doing more damage than driving it.

Mines got an uprated oil pressure system on it so it gets the correct amount of oil at a far higher PSI than the factory (110PSI if memory serves over 90PSI), one of the first things I did, thus negating that problem both at idle and also higher RPM. Well in theory it does, does it work in real life, hard to measure like most things

Quite a few are now, plugged into main electric for the refrigerator units. Seen ASDA and Tesco do this. Only know as I work on them

In some areas it's a specific offence, and rightly so. Around here, I've seen enforcement folk with hi-vis jackets on with warnings on idling, fine a guy.
