IE7 on the left Firefox on the right
how blurry is that.. is this windows idea of making things easier to read, well i dont think so im bgettnig a bad head looking at it

To have Internet Explorer use the same ClearType settings as Windows

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab, scroll to the Multimedia section, clear the Always use Clear Type for HTML check box, and then click OK.
The changes will take effect the next time you start Internet Explorer.

Are you using a CRT btw?

TFT 2 dell's and ive switched it off.. :D was doing my head in. who the **** designed that horrible software>??? cleartype more like blurrytype to me.

Is there any way to set it to open link in a new tab by default?

If you really want to, Google 'cleartype tuner', it's on the MS website. Download and isntall that, and it lets you easily tweak the level of ClearType that is applied. You might find you prefer it once you can choose how it looks, because the default level always seems too strong to me.

The best way to 'tweak' ClearType is to switch it off and kill it with fire. I can't understand how people think it looks better on either type of screen.

I had the same problem as posted here. It took me a while to find the setting in the options.

I think it should be disabled by default in IE7 and then people can enable it if they want.

definately.. i think its a stupid option.. it just looks horrible. makes our nice screens look pants :( i need text to be Sharp and crystal clear or i get a headache reading it

No doubt it's personal preference, but if you have a decent enough display and it's set up properly, ClearType is the only way to go. It's not as nice as OS X's font smoothing, but it's pretty close. I can't stand looking at a display which doesn't use it.

What do you mean by decent display? If anything, ClearType is to compensate for the inadequacies of a bad or low resolution/density display, surely?

IMO OS X's smoothing is perhaps worse. In addition to smoothing, it makes bold characters appear thicker and heavier than they are supposed to be.

Thats what I thought.

If I enable cleartype on my Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP it makes everything blurry and gives me a headache but on my girlfriends cheaper Hyundai B70A it makes things more readable.

I've found the same thing except the other way around. On my Dell workstation and my NEC at home I find it's lush with Cleartype, but on my Hitachi TFT it gives me a stonking headache after a while.

But, when using Vista, it's fine.

This is so silly!

I always keep cleartype enabled on my computer and Firefox has been fine but if I use internet explorer 7, I don't want it enabled.

That's the problem and Microsoft doesn't offer that option!?

OS X smoothing is fine because all apples comes with very high resolutions screens so it is less noticeable but it is different story on Windows with varying sizes/resolutions of TFTs.

Not blurry, just not blocky :) Stick with it and you'll get used to it.

Indeed. I thought it was horrid with it on for ages, but now I think totally the opposite, takes about 2 days getting used to, tbh.
