If AMD?

Desktop Bulldozer barely even matters to AMD's bottom line. Hence why it was pushed back in favour of ramping production for Llano.

It's important in terms of PR, but otherwise its of little import in and of itself. More important are the server iterations and the updated Bulldozer-Llano (Krishna).

Anyway, it looks like Bulldozer will be very fast for desktop, having looked at the only semi-reliable numbers so far (expected performance calculated by extrapolation from crippled B0 / B1 samples).

I think it's more a case of Intel being 'finished' if they don't find a way to compete with ARM's SoCs and to a lesser extent AMD's APUs. They really got caught with their pants down the way the market's going ... totally unprepared.

So why are you using a computer instead of using pen and paper?

I use pen and paper every day of my life and still believe it's the best for of brainstorming/note taking... You can't argue with da Vinci.

I just started writing a big rant about computers and simplicity, but I deleted it because I don't believe you truly are that stupid.

But if you're actually being serious here... I was clearly taking the ****

If BD is a flop in terms of taking the performance crown back it will be priced down to where it competes favourably and will sell well. If it is a success i doubt it will massively increase AMD share but will be good PR.

I think it is enthusiasts taking all this very seriously and predicting death of this and that if something doesn't work out but enthusiasts are a tiny minority of user's and like it or not end of the day don't really count.

Amd will go on much as before whatever BD brings and thats it, they will not suddenly go pop and disappear intel won't suddenly become the only desktop cpu maker so nothing to worry about.

Haha, yeah I was taking the ****. But I live by the old adage "Things are never as simple as they seem, apart from the guests on Jeremy Kyle"

Is that likely, tho? Even if AMD did shut up shop and close tomorrow?

Do you think Intel could get away with charging that price, or would it simply push people to alternative solutions like ARM chips?

I remember Intel 386 DX and 486 DX2. Intel then had total dominance of the x86 market and these chips were kept high end (and high cost) for many years. It was only when Cyrix and Amd 586 appeared were Intel forced to drop prices.

I hope AMD are finished, then all the Intel Fan Boys can cry at £700+ CPU's. ;)

While i doubt processors would jump up that much i wouldn't be surprised if the Celeron, Pentium and possible i3 price range of chips would disappear leaving you with starting prices around the £150 for a CPU.

Chuggerboom in "AMD doomed" shocker.

The world doesn't quite work so simply. A good example of something very small (and totally unpredictable) being a big factor in how well a product does is the issues that Sandybridge motherboards had this year. If AMD had happened to have a serious alternative at the time it would have been a disaster - remember that most people aren't fan boys so don't hold some false sense of loyalty to a particular company. If they lose confidence, they lose confidence and that's when you've got a problem.

It will only take another issue like we saw earlier this year for Intel's reputation to start slipping.

I couldn't care less if AMD beat sandybridge, I will always go for their lower priced and slightly slower processors that get the job done.
