If Doom didnt exist...

i swear page up and page down were look up and look down respectively.

but yes, i think the OP is right, BUT if doom had not existed maybe something else would have been made that over the years and many modifications etc. that would have made manufacturers make faster hardware and we could all be sitting here on quad core 10ghz now, however there are many ifs but overall i think without doom we'd be looking at a completely different pc.

also there wouldn't have been that AWESOME doom 3 case mod.

The Orignal Doom series games never had a look up/down. Duke3D did, and other games using that engine/style at the time.

Doom multiplayer was really only a LAN thing that you played at work with your mates. I think the first online game i played at home was C&C, I must have gave BT so much money back in those days, my friend and I used to take turns dialing each other up, spent hours on the phone when it was like 3p a min back then.

Then the first 0800 ISP came in, Red Hot Ant i think it was, that's when online gaming really took off.

First quality mainstream 2.5d FPS (wolf3d had flat levels). Quake deserves credit too for going properly 3d.

sorry to be an ass but when is 2.5d "proper" 3d?

Doom was not "properly" 3D. It was totally mind blowing at the time though.

*EDIT must read sentences properly. Although you started with Why Doom was Great....

IIRC the first 0800 isp was x-stream who got the ball rolling at weekends in early 1999. After a few months BTi offered freeweekends which eventually expanded to after 6pm on weekdays and then finally full 24/7 (by which point a whole host of isps including RHA were involved).

However there were various ways prior to 'official' 0800s that were in use by gamers, for example you could sign up to some telcos that charged max 25p (iirc) for any 0845 call, which people used to dial in to Wireplay.

Likewise I had a couple of clanmates who lived in London and used Nildram's local (0171?) dialup number, with a utility to automatically reconnect every 10mins (free local calls up to 10mins on their telco). With a static IP from Nilly and ISDN, it wasn't too bad because you would reconnect within a second or two, with the same IP address, and hence you wouldn't get disconnected from Quake/IRC etc.

But yeah, I think games like Quake3 and CS were quite fortunate in many ways that they came out around the same time as unmetered internet was starting to take off in this country.

i dont think the power of pc's would have been any different today if doom/wolf3d had never been made after all pc's have been growing in inportance to people thesedays and are used more for office.designing.photoshop then playing games

maybe the fps games we play today would have been different but not much tbh because at the end of the day some other person would poped along and made a fps maybe the style could be different

it makes me laugh when some silly yank kid gets all stressed and goes on a gun killing spree and they blame it on him playing "doom" for hours on end.

Yeah them stories always make me laugh, it's obviously counter strike :D Boom headshot... wtf wall haxing mother...beeep *grabs army supply of nades and guns* Killing spree, unstoppable, god like!

Damn americans and their guns take things waaaay to seriously.

Some of the words which were brought to the fore or undertook new meanings thanks to Doom:

Frag/telefrag
Map/mapping (used to mean level/level design)
Deathmatch
Circle-Strafe
Camping
Respawn

...to name but a few

Before "Doom" and "Wolfenstein" there was "Corporation", from Core designs.
Corporation was a 3d fps with rpg elements, far in advance of doom in most areas it lacked only a coherent control system.

Make no mistake, we would still have everything from fps now , with or without doom and wolf-3d.

+ the likes of Space Hulk and.................Hired Guns?
