If gpu is dvi-D does the lead from a VGA screen have to be DVI-D?

i have a VGA monitor which i want to plug into a DVI-D socket on my GPU but can that end that goes into the gpu be dvi A etc or does it have to be dead on DVI-D as the socket please ?

DVI-D does not carry an analogue (VGA) signal
DVI-I does
DVI-A is just the analogue portion of DVI-I

Modern graphics cards have mostly given up on analogue and only have DVI-D.

If your graphics card has DVI-I you can use a basic DVI to VGA cable

If you only have DVI-D on the graphics card you will need an "active" DVI-D to VGA cable. Some cheap ones work, some don't.
