If i go for a 8800GTS will my processor or ram hinder performance?

Hello,
My current setup is:

Abit AN8 Fatality SLI motherbaord.
Corsair XMS DDR 2Gig.
AMD X2 939 3800 @ 2500Mhz
BFG 7800GT OC
Samsung 225BW 22" 1680 X 1050

I want to run games at full detail at monitors native resolution, but find some struggle with the current setup (oblivion for one). Do you think this is due to the GFX card or the processor/ram cambo?

Thanks
Late

I was going to ask a very similar question; hope you don't mind if I post it here in your thread ;)

What I have is not as good as your setup, being:

Opty 146 @ 2.4 (s939)
1gig DDR-1 mem
Asus AN8-E mobo

Was wondering what the best GFX card I could get (also for 1680x1050) before hitting the CPU bottleneck.

You will see a massive boost in oblivion with a 8800 and a conroe 6300 @3ghz.

I nearly doubled my FPS in oblivion going to conroe and 8800 GTX but thas with my conroe running at 3.8ghz.

You will see a nice boost but that CPU you currently have but will still be the problem I would have thought.

Good choice. An A64 at 2.5ghz is still reasonably quick for games and when playing at 1680x1050 you are largely GPU limited (especially in games like Oblivion).

If you look here: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_8800_gtx_gts_amd_cpu_scaling/page12.asp you can see that there is basically no improvement in framerate moving from an x2-3800+ (2ghz) to an FX-62 (2.8ghz). Even with a 8800GTX you are gpu limited, so running a 8800GTS on an older cpu is a great way of boosting performance.

In fact, as far as high resolution gaming goes, there's an argument to say that people who can afford GTS and a mobo/cpu upgrade would be better off simply getting a GTX :)

It will be fine.

Don't bother comparing anything with 3dmark. It bases its results too much on CPU speed, isn't a good representation of what frame rates you will actually get in games.

Most games aren't anywhere as CPU dependent as 3dmarks score is (especially 3dmark06)

CPU does make a difference i had a [email protected] and went too a c2d and the fps shot up in games.

Having a faster gpu over cpu is the way imo, your fps will fly up going too a 8800gts/gtx but if you was to stick a c2d in what you have now you wouldn't gain as much, get the card and stick as you are for now.

Recent articles (NV releases included) on the G80 series state that this GPU takes on several tasks that used to be donr by the CPU meaning that there is less chance of CPU bottlenecking.
Go over to TOMS and have a look at their CPU/G80 tests, it shows that a C2D/G80 combo is faster in games than a A64/G80 setup but in higher resolution there is little to be gained when both CPUs were OCed.
Just crank up the in game settings to max and up the AA/AF.

My setup in sig does ok on my Belinea 22". The GX2 is overclocked and the A64 is at 2.5ghz so it's performance is around GTS level.

I went from an inno3D 7800gt so the performance jump should be similar to what you'll see! Might even be a bit nicer in other ways as the GTS doesn't have the SLi gremlins of the GX2.

I think it would be a worthy and competent upgrade! :)
