If I purchased a sim free iphone 4s.....

woah!

carphone ones lock themselves to the first sim that goes in them. The network ones come prelocked. The only place you'll buy a fully unlocked one is from Apple.

I bought mine from CPW knowing full well it would do this, then as soon as I got it I stuck my voda sim in there (which I had no plans to change anyway) then contacted them for an unlocking code immediately. It took a bit of cajoling because they didn't recognise the handset as one of theirs but eventually it got the itunes unlock and now it's fully sorted, unlock was FOC.

Not sure how well other networks deal with that sort of thing but to be honest unless you must have it tomorrow or you're miles from an apple (not APR) store I'd just buy it from there, same price and properly unlocked.

Hmmm thats not good! The carphone warehouse guy told me it was fully unlocked and I could chop and change between networks as I pleased.

Its even advertised as sim free and unlocked.

What to do now?

Its a bit late for that, as I already have the handset. I was going to leave Tesco mobile and go with voda but the voda sim surprise surprise doesn't work in the handset.

No literature in the shop informed me that it would lock to the first network sim inserted. Can I ask for my money back as apple aren't willing to help?

Thanks.

Well you've got a very strong argument for "not as described". Do you have anything in writing that reflects what the salesman said?

Its listed as sim free, every other sim free phone they sell doesn't latch itself to a network as soon as you feed it a sim card.

I asked the guy when I was looking at phones that sim free meant not tied to any network and he said yes, as the sim free ones are generally cheaper due to being subsidised by the networks.

its pretty straightforward normally to get them unlocked by the network, its a technicality basically.

I knew what I was buying and how I was to go about unlocking it before I bought mine from CPW, it was just easier for me that way.

Whatever netowkr it gets locked to will have a procedure and I bet it's easy then once it's an official unlock it just stays unlocked permanently no matter what sim you put in.

I was wrong, Sorry Mike.

You've no need to apologise mate, I was wrong to buy Apple.... :(

Indeed, but I was told it was sim free and I could change networks as often as I wanted to with no issues.

I should mention at this point I live in Cornwall. We've only just got mains electricity and mains gas! Legend has it that soon we will have real roads and fibre broadband ;)

An Apple store might be pushing it!

Apple do sell goods online ya know :p

Take it back to the shop, demand a refund (you'll still be within your rights) and just order one direct from apple. You'll prpb have it in 48hrs.
