Hi,
Just finished building a Sandybridge PC for my son and dont really want to go through the hassle of customising all the settings again.
If I swap the mobo to avoid future problems ( unlikely anyway, I reckon ) will I have to go through a fresh install again ?
If I do I will risk leaving it, if not I will RMA it
thanks !

oops cant edit title from W& to W7 :(

I dont think that you should need a reinstall... I have heard that their might be a different on board NIC but thats not going to stop the system booting.

Any mobo swap should be followed by a reinstall :(

not really tbh, if all he's doing is a B2 to B3 revision swap of exactly the same make & model board, then ide be amazed if he hit any issues, i know when i swap from B2 to B3 i won't bother with a reinstall, the most i'll do is pull the mobo drivers off in safe mode before hand.

No you will not need to re-install. Having carried this out on two machines, all that happens is that when you boot up the first time, assuming same device options in the bios, Win 7 will pick up and install the device drivers again and ask to restart. Then, you will be prompted to activate.

If it was a totally new board (make and model) then usually yes, but in this case if it is simply a slightly revised board you should be fine.

You should have no problems and no reload will be necessary, generally speaking the only times it works is when the chipsets are the same, and even then theres no guarantees.

I have had one install shared between an MSI P67A-GD65 and an Asus P8P67 Pro that worked fine, after all drivers were updated.

Activation is required as stated above.

ok then folks, it seems worth swapping over then,
thanks for the replies, if it doesnt work I will know who to blame !!!!

Just done the same swap myself this week and it went fine. Only thing I had to do was reactivate windows over the phone using the automated system.

My swap from my q9550 + abit ip35-e combo to i2500k with asus p8p67 pro managed to boot up as normal with windows 7.
