has anyone just packed up and gone ?

The best way to get a working visa is not be British.

Of the people I know who have moved over there, they have all been married to Americans (and even then getting a green card was a mare) or they were working for US companies and were sponsored.

Basically, you don't.

Depends if the OP is one of those "OMGZOR I want to live in America" people who has no idea about things and nothing to back it up, or if they are serious about it.

If serious, as marrying someone is not going to be too likely for most, you need to find a comapny who can sponsor you for the appropriate visa. This isn't easy and it is notoriously difficuly to get in over there, but it's not impossible.

Go work for a big american company who have offices in the uk eg P&G etc etc

Then after a year or so you may be able to transfer to one of the american offices. They do not have offices in NY though, but works for the example of size of company you should look at.
