If I was to start playing Mass Effect...

Questions on the left are just info but you need it for achievements if you go for them.

Stuff on the right makes it move on. Top right is good karma and bottom right is bad karma.

Being a trophy whore though I'm going to want those achievements if I do give it a second chance :o

From video reviews I've seen it seems Mass Effect 2 is a much different game and not so RPG like - is this a fair assessment?

Trust me when I say it'll take you a LONG time to get 100% achievements on ME1, you need at least 3 play throughs!

ME2 is still like ME1, just the tweaks on it make it a bit more playable. ME2 still has a very similar squad based orders system, but doesn't have any of the silly inventory / upgrades as ME1 has. The RPG portion of ME2 is a lot more 'dumbed down', with only a couple of squad point things to choose from.

Combat does get better when you get the hang of it. If your squad power usage is set up as defense only, then all you need to worry about is co-ordinating attacks.

Mass Effect 1 has a lot of grinding, wheras ME2 doesn't need very much grinding at all to get 100% completion of the game.

Mass Effect 2 still has the same wheel of speech, probably a similar amount. The main thing I think you need to worry about is if you actually care about taking in any of the information people say in the game.

Remember the Mass Effect 2 demo is on Xbox Live/PSN too! It's got a couple of missions for you to play through that give a decent idea of how the games compare.

I have tried to play one on the pc and xbox and hated the way it controlled and turned it off pretty sharpish. The second is one of my favorite games.

That's very interesting, might skip ME1 then and pick up a cheap copy of ME2 and see if I can get on with that any better....

The first one I found very hard to get into... it was only until about the 8 hour point I really started to enjoy it. Well worth it though, one of my favourite gaming series ever!

Probably my favourite gaming series ever, I'd play them in order to get the full experience, some things in the first can be annoying but stick with it.

I remember I was annoyed at how simple the combat was in ME2. I liked managing my squad mates all the time.

And yes, adept for the win :D I rarely fired a gun at all.

Outstanding, will do that in 3 then. Bit bored of playing soldier

I'd hope they let you change your character in ME3, but there's always the chance you're stuck with the type of class from ME2, unless they think up of a decent reason to allow you to change it (like ME2 with you basically being rebuilt from scratch anyway).

I have the feeling Mass Effect 2 will flow in to Mass Effect 3 a bit more seamlessly with controls/GUI/combat.
