Tinker with it some more...

I'm a happy owner of a stable, reliable OCUK built machine that is almost 3 months old. My board of choice was the vpro gen 3 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-491-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1990 I have been reluctant to update the bios due to the shoddy ASUS mobo support forum and the horror stories that some people have had with the process. There is nothing wrong with it, just want to be up to date. I just wish there was firm advice from ASUS on the matter.

I was brave enough to update my M4 firmware recently, mainly due to keeping an eye on the experts here since my last build and clear instructions from Crucial.

No matter how much I tinker with my machine, I can't seem to break it. I'm pretty sure that if I scratched this itch, I could.

I have a new build in the pipeline and will be ruling out ASUS because of this.

Peace.

U Crazy fo'?

Its No more scary than updating your SSD was, I just updated the bios on my Asus and you dont even need to turn it on just stick the bios (on usb stick) in the back and press a button then wait till the light stops flashing and its ready. All done on standby power how cool is that?

I ve use a Asus board and updated its bios ( LGA775) ROG and it was fine after

same as above, ive had asus boards for years now, and never had a problem updating bios, but i have never used the bios update software from windows.

this should be avoided at all costs, and is probs where you hear the horror storys from.

always use ezflash from bios, or flash from a usb formatted with HP boot tool

I understand what you say, it still goes past my capabilities and experience.
Are there any drawbacks to not having the latest BIOS for mobos? I'm determined to break this machine, it just wont have it.

Peace

its easy to do all you need to do is download it onto a usb flash drive and use the flash utility in the bios and that is it, it is straight forward to do. all MB maufacturers have there problems with bios flashing not just asus i would say they are the easiest to flash and the safest, if you have already done your M4 then you should be able to do your bios no prolem at all

Thanks, that gives me a little more confidence.

I've read somewhere that a person flashed in windows while dowloading something then the machine hangs and he was prompted to re flash in bios after he bounced the box. But instead he push the bios reset button. Then it's all dark.....

TBF if you dont have any problems then there really is no need to update a BIOS. Most changes to them are speed or compatibility updates so if everything works and you are happy with it then forget about the update.

They are ridiculously easy these days though. My Rampage II Gene has a file browser in the BIOS flash menu to find the file to flash and just does its thing. Its nowhere near as stupid as it used to be with Dos-booting formatted floppies and whatnot...

Like it's really an issue anyway, costs like £10 for a replacement bios chip, or if you have two of the same type of board you can always just hot flash them.
