Chances of Steam ever going down are very very slim in my mind. I have over a hundred Steam games. If it ever did go bust I would simply visit The Pirate Bay and download backups of all the games i had legitimatly brought from Steam - problem solved
All Steam games require online activation and you must be connected to the net the FIRST time you play them. After that, all the games are available in "Offilne mode" - so yes you can play Steam games without the net, its only needed to activate.
I happen to love Steam after hating it at first. Auto download of patches, friendlists, voicechat, and of course the sales are absolutley legendary! Most of the games I have were brought on a massive discount. Prototype for £5 was the last one I got - and its less than a year old.
We are all used to the images of companies being bought out from under the owners in movies, but that can only happen with publically traded companies. Valve isn't publically traded, it's completely privately held, with no shareholders to answer to.
This is also why they don't declare their revenue and sales figures - because they don't have to.
People used to say that about 3DFX, people used to say that about dozens of other big names that are now bust. Vale could very easily not be here in 10or 15years times. Just because you are no1 now it does not mean you cannot go bust.
Can see why some people want something physical they can see and touch, but discs get scratched, manuals get dog-eared and tear/get lost.
With a Steam game, you download it once, then backup the folder somewhere for restoration at a later date. The CD-key can be stuck into a text folder somewhere. I've done it many times. Not infallible, but for me at least it's a hell of a lot easier. Obviously you are still tied to the Steam software itself however.
