If True.. Oh Dear Nvidia!

I was going to say, that that's what they do when a new gen is released they EOL all the old high end parts. But suddenly it all makes sense, what with Nvidia focussing Fermi as a PPU more than a GPU

This worries me they seams to be moving their sights away from games and i do think we need 100% from either company to keep up with the other

I think NVidia have been setting themselves up for this fall for a while (if the above article is indeed true).

Their idiotic rebranding or cards and model number jiggering and Bumpgate were the final steps towards failure for me, it's seems it's turned and bitten them in the butt now though.

Now is the perfect time for Intel to enter the market with something special to keep ATI on their toes, it will most likely be NVidia's death knell a la 3DFX but so long as there's someone to stand against the other as consumers we'll be OK IMO (unless Intel's offering sucks).

I do agree, the old saying you need to treat people well when you on your way up because when you on your way down they will treat you like you treated them and i do think there will be some pay back.
There is a lot of ill will aimed at nvidia some justified some not, i do hope they get a bloody nose but i don't want them to go under and amd needs all the cash they can get at moment.

if thats true then its a big nail in the coffin of pc gaming.
Don't forget there's console gaming in there too. If there's only one GPU manufacturer when it comes to the next round of consoles having their hardware specced out, there will be only one company who can provide the parts!

i was looking forward to what nvidia would have to offer, looks very promising on their site. come on nvidia i want competition!!!

I'll believe it when I see it, Nvidia is loaded anyway they will come back. They been raking in the money for years.
May be AMD/ATI can buy them out just like Nvidia did with 3DFX?
That really peed me off when that happend, used to love 3DFX cards. Had the 3DFX Voodoo II 16MB, 3DFX Voodoo 5500 64MB.

If true the really sad thing is that Nvidia drivers are great & they are reported to spend $100M's per year to employ all the technicians who spend 100's of hours (for free to developers not free to Nvidia!!) working on the TWIMTBP program.

If Nvidia go under ATI will be the only company left and they need to invest a lot more money in drivers & optimisations for their hardware.

PC gaming needs Nvidia to survive

Someone would buy them up cheap and i do think they too big and still got quite a lot of money to go under look at amd,but i could be wrong.

Personally I would take it with a pinch of salt. But you have to consider a large part of nVidia's income is from lower end cards and the article does mention its the high end, mid range cards.

I personally do not think nVidia makes anywhere near the profit on high end cards to what they do on low end cards. Look at the sales they must have for low end cards in teh ps3.

If this article is true I would take a guess at nVidia are cost cutting and taking out the extreame costs in high end develiopment for the time being to spend time on low end cards and maybe restructure.

thats irrelevant, consoles have huge corporations backing them up. nvidia was the only pc hardware company that was actually funding pc games development. if nvidia goes i dont think developers will bother with pc gaming anymore. its already bad for us pc gamers, its going to get a lot worse.

A lot of big companies have been raking it in over the years, didn't stop the recession from sending them under or crippling them to the point of having to take drastic measures to keep afloat. I think this is true, you only have to look at the current NV stock around the web to see cards are not being restocked, with more on an ETA than in stock.

Although I'm pleased that Nvidia seem to be getting a dose of karma, I totally agree with what others have said: we need competition.

“boldly turning itself into a vibrant GPU compute and cell phone chip giant.”
The problem is they have already lost in the cellphone market. PowerVR pretty much rule that with parts far in advance of Nvidia.

But that part of the problem their monolithic chips are not scaling down to the lower end like the 5*** will be once the lower end 5*** come out with dx11 what can nvidia do until they get their lower end parts out with dx11.

Dell and hp and the rest need dx11 cards when windows 7 out to push sales of new pc's, i can just see it in the high street posters with windows 7 and dx11 all over the place.

lets see what happens when they put some REAL funds and effort on the cellphone market. its still nvidia, they make the best gpus in the world.

The worrying thing is there always is an element of truth in most articles, I suppose it's just down to how big that is in this article.

Clearly with Win7 around the corner there is a problem as Nvidia has no new hardware to offer

Duran Said “lets see what happens when they put some REAL funds and effort on the cellphone market. its still nvidia, they make the best gpus in the world.“
It’s too late for that I believe. Not only is the PowerVR far better suited and more advanced over Nvidia but PowerVR have pretty much become the standard in the 3d mobile market. All the major company’s are already signed up to use them for years to come.n The fight over the mobile market was the past two years and Nvidia’s chips got pushed out. It’s a bit late to come in now.

Thinking about this a bit more there maybe some truth in it as high end graphics cards are a tiny fraction of the market so not much profit in it & R&D costs are astronomical so they make up the difference on the mainstream parts which is where ATI are dominating as Nvidia have had some issues with their production methods.

All PC gamers stand to lose from this as forget the competition and how it affects pricing Nvidia were & are a massive contributor to PC games development many games only came to PC because Nvidia were willing to donate their engineers for free in exchange for advertising. Take that element away and all of a sudden multiplatform games become a lot more riskier for publishers as ATI do not contribute anywhere near as much as they lack the resource to do so. NV have built their's up over 6 years. Sure some of their tactics are underhand but if they did not sponsor the inclusion of AA in Batman: AA the developers would not have bothered with that or it would have taken much longer.

Wonder if Intel would be interested in a takeover as they could apply their chip expertise with Nvidia software knowledge to create an unstoppable powerhouse!

nvidia are probably just axing the high end cards as they were always borderline profitable for them anyway after the big price drops caused by the 4800 series. I expect it's just in advance of them being replaced by a gt300 high end set . They probably have got enough stocks of the gt200 based cards to last them to the gt300 launch anyway.

Mind you that being said - I expect that Nvidia have reaped the whirlwind for their past underhanded ways of doing business - (rule one of that particular tactic - don't get caught (nvidia have consistently)) and with AMD/ATi starting to get their act together (on the GPU at least) there now is a very viable alternative

geez :S this cant be true! i mean, ive always been with ATI since my geforce 4 failed. really like ATI's stuff. but nvidea keep it interesting! keep ati prices down for me, its a real shame if this happens, but it would be good if they stopped all there TWIMTBP stuff, crippling games we pay good money for if we have an ati card. i seriously doubt they will stop making super high end cards. i know they will have a top end GT300 part. this article already comes with a 40tonne truck full of salt. although i guess we will have to wait and see.

Nice post - i agree.
