With rumors that Valve are going to release Steam box hardware along with an OS based on Linux to support the system, just out of interest, I wandered how many of you guys would switch from Windows over to a Valve based OS on your desktops if you had the option?

I would def switch lol.

'If somebody could add a poll with these options would be appreciated' (:

In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and we’re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level. Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases.

Awesome, bet all the neigh sayers from this thread will soon be running SteamOS .

Dual boot of SteamOS for gaming and W7 for work stuff is the way forward. Personally can't wait to test this out, hopefully get a nice lil boost of performance, and the satisfaction that it is a 'free' operating system. I bet benching on the SteamOS would be better as well..

Microsoft have been unchallenged for to long, and let's be honest although W8 is good, it's def not got the desktop PC gamer in mind. This is where SteamOS will shine, a OS made by gamers for gamers.

But your reason for not wanting to is because you don't want another box in the living room. Don't you think that's a little short sighted? Computers are becoming Ubiquitous so surely it would make sense to enable users access to their software from multiple platforms?

Exactly, eventually hardware will become so similar, that people will be using 'services' rather than picking a particular 'hardware'. I.e one service of your choice that will run over multiple devices.. PlayStation are going this way as well.

With regards to Valve's reason for doing this, yes it will help them but also will be helping the PC gaming industry as a whole. Why should Windows be the only platform for gaming? I would rather use Steam the service on a variety of devices, not just confined to a Windows based PC.
