With rumors that Valve are going to release Steam box hardware along with an OS based on Linux to support the system, just out of interest, I wandered how many of you guys would switch from Windows over to a Valve based OS on your desktops if you had the option?

I would def switch lol.

'If somebody could add a poll with these options would be appreciated' (:

It won't run DX, and OgL isn't up to scratch from a developer point of view and titles already out won't get an overhaul, so no.

No. What about other games that are non-Valve? Valve have been preaching on about Linux for ages now and that's what they would base it on. I don't mind Linux but the only real reason that they are doing it is because it doesn't cost them anything to develop on. Are all games going to be supported on the Valve platform? I sincerely doubt it with no Direct X, etc.

no chance. ok valve might port their back catalogue to run on it but there's not much chance of that happening with all the other zillions of games available on steam. and what about non steam games? and then of course you have all your other windows desktop apps as well.

it might suit some but definitely not me.

I am very comfortable with Linux and prefer it to Windows for some things. So if there were enough good titles released on it then yes I would. So it really depends on how many good titles they have.

Windows would never allow a rival a large enough customer base to be an effective rival, it is not called a monopoly for nothing.

Would be interesting if some one could set up a global standard though.

All I want to see from Steam is a streaming device that lets me play my games in the lounge while they are running on my gaming pc in the other room.

I don't really want to buy another high end device.

I know you can do the above already with wireless video senders but it would be nice to see a steam branded solution.

Lol,windows dont have a monopoly, they are far from a monopoly these days, due to mobile devices. Android even has the bigger marketshare, across all platforms. Ontop of that tablets are forecast to outsell traditional computers in q4. Strenghtening androids dominance further.

I don't even care if they did/do have a monopoly (in the 'most popular' sense, not the financial) as long as they make a good product. If there was another operating system that supported everything I wanted to do with ease and worked better, I'd consider it. Until then, I'll keep using Windows because it works.

Linux already has the ability to login remotely to do as you would like.

If I could get the same performance as i do in windows in pc games and I could use all (most) of the windows applications that I currently use in linux. Then I would consider swapping out windows 7 for linux. But if ms don't release something better than 8.1 then Ill probably end up moving over to linux or freebsd when windows 7 is no longer supported.

I ran linux only systems on all my home PCs for many years. Only switched back to windows when I wanted to get back into PC gaming.

Only way I'd consider it is if 50% or more of the games I already own will run adequately under steamOS (I'd be happy to run under some kind of win/dx emulation layer).
