If you break spaghetti in half...

I'm confused at to what we are talking about here, if you break spaghetti in two you just have spaghetti that's half as long....

Take some spaghetti. Hold it with one hand at each end. Try to snap it. And it will most likely shatter, rather than breaking neatly in two.

So just one piece, I'm totally trying it now.

Tis true, good think I don't normally snap spaghetti in that way.

You guys ever tried holding an egg right way up between your index finger and your thumb and trying to crush it?

This does quiet often happen to me! But it isnt impossible to snap it into just 2 pieces. If you hold it closer to where your going to snap it, it tends not to shatter all over the kitchen :)

Not having tried it I will guess that once snapped the small amount of stored strain energy in the spaghetti (from the bending) is suddenly released and causes the parts either side of the central break to accelerate and break under thier own inerntia. You could prevent the effect by breaking at a close point or by twisting.

Can't believe I typed that :o:D
