My old headmistress used to say that before you say anything, you should ask yourself three questions:
1. Is it true?
2. Is it kind?
3. Is it necessary?
and only say it if the answer to at least two of those questions is 'yes'. Sensible words, you might think. However, I don't agree with her. If something is necessary, you should say it whether or not it's true or kind. If it's not necessary, you should be able to answer yes to two of the following three questions:
1. Is it true?
2. Is it kind?
and most importantly,
3. Is it funny?
