if you could only have use 1 lens

you guys need to say what crop factor you are all using.

on my 1.5x D3100, i'd go with something similar to the kit lens. the 17-55mm f2.8G looks excellent if i had the money.

Oooo one lens? I always bang on about my Sigma 50mm 1.4 so I'd lean towards that, but if it's a lens you want with money being no object I'd say the new Canon 24-70 to allow more range. Then I'd make friends with someone with one wide angle lens and one 70-200, and another with 400 and 500mm lenses. Not forgetting your new friend with a fisheye :D

Depends:
- If I could have anything, probably a Nikon 85mm F1.4 (assuming that I needed to have something capable of tracking a moving target)
- I'm a Canon user, and if I didn't care about weight or speed, 85mm L
- Back in the real world and with my 5D (taking about of cost, weight, focusing speed), 85mm F1.8

I'd probably go with a super zoom. Something tack sharp at 400-500mm. Ideal for wildlife photos!

I just wish I was decent at portraits as I could make a nice living from that area like a lot of other photographers and enjoy the super narrow DOF but the most I get out of DOF at the moment is via my sigma 150mm F2.8 macro lens.
