I just wonder why people are so nervous to ask for things?

I just got back from the tip, and with a bit of luck, someone has just ended up a little better off for it.

Long story short, we are replacing all our old dark oak furnature (most of it passed down from my Grandparents to me) which is 20+ years old. Nothing wrong with it apart from just being old and somewhat dated. Otherwise, its still in excelent condition (polished weekly) and sturdy and safe as usual.

Anyway, was up the tip about to throw out the extending table and chairs, we wanted to give it to a charity, however, as it had no fire labels, we couldn't donate it. We offered it in the newspaper, but its a *big* set, so for most houses, even when not extended it would dominate the room, so nobody could realistically take it.

Anyway, as I start unloading it to throw in the skip, a guy built like Mike Tyson walks upto me, and honest to god i've never spoken to someone so nervous, but he just about managed to ask me if there was anything wrong with the set and if I was throwing it out, so I explained it to him, and he even more nerviously asked if he could have it as he has just purchased his first house, and has no furnature for it.

I said I had no problem with that and was more than happy to help drive it around to his house, and take it inside, the guy was so grateful, he couldn't stop thanking me.

It feels good to help, but at the same time, realy, why are people so nervous to ask?

They don't want to look like beggars I guess.

I was once in a pub when the landlord received delivery of some Smirnoff promotional stuff including a snowboard. He was an old school type and just looked at it and said "What the hell am I gonna do with a snowboard?"... Cue me popping up with "If you don't want it, I'll have it mate" and he just handed it over.
I sold it for £80 on Gumtree to a Kiwi guy that was moving to Colorado :D

Then there was the neighbour getting rid of a nice leather sofa.
"Are you chucking that out mate?"
"Yes"
"Can I have it?"
"Yes"
"Thank you very much"

Done.
Ok, it turned to have a live vibrator on a hair trigger stuffed down the back, but hey...

That's really cool :-) That was real nice to drive it round there as well.

Would have been really gutting to have thrown perfectly good furniture out.

For us.. a postman saw an old rally chopper in our skip outside out house, he merely asked if we were throwing it out, and asked if he could buy it to fix it up. We obviously said he could have it free :-) Glad someone saw some potential :-)

I've just picked up a black ash extending dining table with 6 chairs, plus two matching display cabinets as a neighbour of my parents was chucking it as he was moving into a house with his misses.

20 years old, almost perfect condition and fits in our new dining room perfectly!

Since being tight for cash these days, I have no problem being a scrounger :D

Never had any luck with freecycle, just dont get any replies. Perhaps im not doing it right.

You have to bear in mind that when you offer an item on freecycle you usually get somewhere between 20 and 200 emails asking for it. The first of those can arrive within a few seconds of the offer email being distributed.

We have got rid of all sorts of stuff on freecycle - bed, carpet, piano, chairs etc. I'd much rather it go to someone who could make good use of it than chuck it out. Only on one occasion have I encountered anyone who was anything less than polite and very grateful.

I had a desk to get rid of last year, tried Gumtree, card in the window of the local shop and Freecycle, all free to take away. A few of people came round to take it, sadly they were all unable to visualise the dimensions clearly stated and all failed to take it away. I put it outside for 10 minutes while getting something else moved and someone nicked it :D

I have seen more and more people helping each other out these days its good, I have seen someone chucking a wooden dining table someone had it, sanded it down properly, then done the whole wood varnish thing, looked as good as new and to be honest was brilliant.
