*Edit - [Once I get home I will download the demos]

Hi peeps..

I've been away for about a year and I am heading home for the holidays. There are so many awesome games out there and I was just wondering if I could have your opinion on what to splash the cash on this xmas.

My aging system specs are as follows: (I forgot that they are in my signature as well, but nevermind)

P4 478 3.4 800FSB
x1950pro AGP 512Mb
2Gb DDR 3200

I've been looking at getting the Orange box, mainly because I am a big fan of HL2 and also it is 17.99 on most sites now. 3 for one you can't go wrong. - Is there a big jump from episode one to two? Should I play one before getting into two? -

Call of Duty 4 looks amazing, same goes for Crysis.

Basically as I don't have an amazing system anymore, what would run as close to sweet as a nut on my rig? Crysis I guess is out of the question. COD 4 is a maybe, and the Orange Box looks like the best option because it still uses the same source engine and that still works great on my rig.

Perhaps I have just answered my own question, but I would still appreciate any feedback, esp from those of you with the games that I've mentioned and with the same hardware specs, or similar to myself.

Cheers.:)

How does the performance differ in HL2:Episode 2 to HL2?

I remember a while back there was a lot of talk about a core2 processor being the cpu of choice for Episode 2. Those of you who still have a P4 478 like myself or an AMD equivalent, what kind of performance are you getting?

There is no way I can afford a hardware up grade, but I mean, is it playable on a single core cpu while retaining its performance graphics wise?

UT3 ;)

I can't wait. Almost feel like a kid again.

For about 5 seconds it made me feel like a kid again - unti I realised how much slower I was these days when playing this kind of game :)

Whatever you do, don't blink when playing this - or you'll find yourself splattered all over the floor/walls/ceiling :D

Episode 2 and Portal work fine on an old P4 (I finished the games a few months back when I still had one) I did have an 8800GTS which may have helped but I managed to run at 1680 x 1050 with all the bells and whistles

Yes and TF2 works fine on a P4 and a 9800.

Orange Box all the way. I suppose for the storyline it would be better to play Episode 1 before 2.:)

Get the orange box. It'll run great as like you say, it is still the source engine and it is well optimised. You could also consider CoD4 as that runs well even on my cousins AMD3000+, 1gb RAM and X800XT (although low-medium at 1280 with no AA/AF) but the game still looks great infact. Out of all the games this year, COD4 has to win by a mile for optimisation of hardware. :)

Deuteros and maybe Unlimited Adventures (gold box-ssi)

i find it harder to find quality games that are worth the cash.

ohh and bad news for me - my flatm8 has bought me rise of the silver surfer for ps3 lol

Nice! Cheers for all the input guys. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the tip about playing Episode 1 before 2 I think I'll try that :p

Well I had better go get my order in. Think if I get it now I might just be lucky enough to get it for Monday:confused: Let's hope so. :D

Orange Box definitely, will run fine on your PC and is great value especially at the reduced price it is now. Of course play Ep:1 first! :)

Only way you'll get it before christmas is to go out and buy it from a shop. No chance of getting it now. :)

guitar hero III :P

I'm getting GH3 for chrimbo, looking forward to it :)

I'd recommend The Orange Box wholeheartedly, if only for Portal.. it's just so new and novel (sp?)..

The Witcher has also been one of the best games I've played this year :)

If it's one single game then COD4 - you won't be able to run it at ultra-high resolutions with high quality settings though you will be able to play it at a reasonable rate. I'd certainly say it was one of the GOTY and I'm not a big FPS fan. The variety is excellent. The only downside is that you'll complete it in a couple of days (unless you have it on a high difficulty).
