Having accepted that I was wasting my time trying to change the views of anyone here and been suspended twice, a couple of days ago I decided to take off the few days remaining before May 6th and to offer my services to the local Liberal Democrats.

I live in a constituency that is solidly Tory but both New Labour and the Liberal Democrats are still trying to win it. The latter were more than happy to have any help, no questions asked. I have spent most of each day addressing and stuffing envelopes and loading declared voting intentions onto a database. The evenings are spent delivering envelopes and leaflets and asking people how they plan to vote.

It has been a fascinating if exhausting experience and I would heartily recommend it to anyone. Despite the fact that most people are long-term Tory supporters, I have had a fair number of people say that they are thoroughly fed up with the Tories and New Labour, both of whom they consider to be totally corrupt and indifferent to public opinion. However, they are not willing to vote for the Liberal Democrats because they think it would be a wasted vote.

The only instructions I was given were
  • Try to find out and then record the voting intentions of whoever answers the door
  • Dress smartly but don’t wear a suit unless you REALLY only feel comfortable in one
  • ALWAYS be polite and never get into a debate or an argument
  • Don’t try to make up or guess policy – refer them to the leaflet and the manifesto
  • Only deliver in the streets you have been allocated – never near where you live!

Despite this advice, I have got into quite a few discussions and have been absolutely amazed at how interested people are in the Liberal Democrats – hopefully I have persuaded a few of them to consider switching their allegiance.

Going to watch the debate, the BBC News and then Question Time this evening and then an early night and back to stuffing envelopes tomorrow ready for three days knocking on doors over the weekend. I have also volunteered to provide a ferry service for identified housebound supporters on Thursday.

It is probably too late for you to get involved this time around but I can strongly recommend getting involved in the future – you would be amazed at the level of excitement and sense of satisfaction :)

Using your great sales pitch, in no more than one hundred words tell me why I should vote for the Lib Dems.

I really don't like your anti-tory propaganda that you post on this forum and some of the childish name calling you have resorted to, however I take my hat off to you for having the courage of your convictions and actually getting up off your backside and doing something positive and constructive with your time and interest in politics. Well done, I hope you find it a truely rewarding experience!

Moley (Tory but with Lefty Liberal leanings according to all the online surveys I've done.... )

:D

good for you if its true. I respect people that "do" rather than talk bs all day, whatever it is.

I would vote Lib Dem but their policies on both nuclear power, the UK's Nuclear deterrent and other defence cuts means I have to vote tory :///

I said this in the other thread.

A deterrent for who exactly?
We have many allies we can call on should someone challenge us.
Nukes are no longer a deterrent. No one in their right mind would use them in this age.

Every country and group.

They give us a permanent seat on the security council.

The threat of use is enough, that is the point. You get the use of them through the threat alone. I have no doubt Nukes have saved us from many wars and probably even a ww3.

 in this day and age. You got a crystal ball and can see 20-50 years into the future.

You accuse him of having a crystal ball, yet you can see into an alternative reality where we would have had a third world war? :D

This thread has left me open to nightmares of stockhausen turning up at my door and spouting the same nonsense he does on the forum :|

I don't really understand how anyone can be a member/supporter of any one political party. There will always be some part of their policies that you don't agree with, and while I understand that you have to simply vote for the party that best represents your views this would prevent me from truly becoming a "supporter".

Iran, North Korea.

Are you saying we should lay our country's defence in the hand of our current allies? Let them spend the money and we can reap the reward if we say on their good side. We as a country need to be able to defend ourselves in this modern world.

And yes I believe there are circumstances where these weapons could be used, not that we as a country would ever initiate it but without having the power to respond to any incoming attacks as well as the deterrent part possibly stopping it all together.

In an ideal world everyone would abandon nuclear arms but thats just not going to happen.

And what about power, yes the Lib Dem's have it partly correct with investing in green technologies but putting all your eggs in one basket is never a good idea. As a country I think we need to take a more rounded approach, France have a great nuclear program for example. We need to learn from them, but also invest in green tech at the same time.
