...you took all of the shot out of a shotgun cartidge and packed it with animal blood and flesh, could you then shoot it at someone and make it appear to be a real shooting?

Would it hurt the shootee?

I thought of it as a way of faking a death in a script I'm working on and thought it was fairly original, so I won't actually be doing this! Besides, I lack the gun, the cartridge, the blood & guts and the motivation. :D

Hmm, a big spray wouldn't be great.

What if the gun's muzzle was right next to the shootee to make sure the blood & gus didn't have time to spray? Could the contents wound him for real?

He doesn't mean it as a special effect, he wants to use it as a plot device CSI style.

This! I thought I'd said that already but lots of people seem to think I'm trying to invent a special effect technique. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. It would be a plot device - a way of faking a character's death; believable to (the fictional) onlookers and original. The arrow over the head is my insurance idea :D

I've seen pretty realistic gun shot effects done by people using after effects. Pretty amazing what can be achieved for no money, as good as some multi million $ films.

After Effects is nothing short of fantastic in the right hands. It does cost £1,000 though, so not quite 'no money' :D

Okay, new idea:

What about a 'bullet', fired from something sub-sonic like a deLisle carbine, that had no round in the casing - the round being replaced with a blood and a thick wax case (or something better?) tip to keep the blood in?

there is training ammo called which is basically a real round with a blue or pink paintball instead of a bullet that you can shoot through normal guns. If you used one with a blood colored paint it might work but they hurt considerably.

That's great - I'll do some research on them!

Just to be clear *again* about this. I'm not actually going to shoot anyone- it's a FICTIONAL way of faking someone's death. Thanks to all the helpers :)
