Well, it it sounds daft, but maybe the thought was that it might show benefits either to do with impact absorbtion, or possibly an insight into some chemical headache suppresant that could be adapted for human use.

Curiosity about some apparently absurd anomaly has a habit of uncovering unexpected bonuses, and abstract research can be a rich vein. It's a bit like studying wondering why something went mouldy, and ending up with penicillin. I'll bet Alexander Fleming never saw that coming.
