IGN has reviewed Haze - 4.5 out of 10

think ill be avoiding this one, shame as i was looking forward to it at one point but the demo and the numerous terrible reviews has completely put me off :(

Here is my mini review :)

I was going to delete this from my Lovefilm list but thought as it was new I wouldn't bother as you never get titles from them within a week of release... never guess what dropped onto my door mat this morning?!

I think I'm a fair way through it now. I'm sad to say that I have to agree with most of the reviews. While it is not an inherently bad game, it is nothing special or innovative. The storyline is weak and the cutscenes don't help either. They are often too long for what they are trying to say, with to much time looking around rather than actual dialogue taking place. The character you play sounds like a 14 year old and generally makes you want to die just to put him out of his misery and your Mantel friends are just down right annoying. Vehicles are horrific. Nectar is rather pointless. As a Mantel soldier it just lets you do everything better and you find yourself using it all the time. As a rebel all you really get is play dead and an extra type of grenade. The gameplay is repetitive and generic that offers nothing new.

The sound effects are poor and the music is pitiful. It's often hard to hear what your squadmates are saying and things like gun sound effects are generic, as are the guns themselves. The graphics are not as bad as I thought they would be, but they could be a lot better. Some places do look good, and others - such as the swamp - are very atmospheric. Sadly though this good places are let down by the much more numerous bad areas and the flamethrowers flame looks like something from the N64 and I'm not exaggerating. Textures are of low resolution, artwork is dull and the level design is angular and uninspiring. I've found a few bugs, but nothing major, apart from being able to walk past the edge of the map in the swamp level.

Multiplayer and co-op are a lot more fun, but sadly not good enough to save this game. Co-op suffers from all of the above only you get to experience it with a friend and the MP has no new or exiting gameplay modes and the levels are very similar to SP meaning they are of the same rather boring design. It has in game squad based voice communication which is quite good and you can access your XMB friends list to check your messages though only when on the main menu. You can have bots too, but as with the SP their AI is, well... crap.

In summery, it's an ok game, though it could have been a lot better in all areas. I'll be completing it and playing it online for a few days with a friend or two, but then I'll be sending it back never to be thought of again. I'd recommend borrowing it or renting it, though I wouldn't buy it and would be quite disappointed if I had done.

I don't think it is that bad.
But TBH Resistance is 10 a much better game, and that was a launch title. This has nothing new over Resistance other than the online co-op.

Resistance even looks better than this, and even i will admit that sometimes resistance can look a bit bland, but that was out 18 months ago!!

As i stated previously, i feel the hate also stems from the hype that has been created for this game. There is nothing more frustrating than a developer constantly pimping their game for years, delaying and delaying, only to produce tat.

I feel its a valid treatment, developers should be discouraged from this behavior as unfortunately hype tends to help sell games but also wastes my time.

Yes, Haze makes Resistance look like Halo. It's that bad.

Inconsistent is how i'd describe it. There are some nice looking levels but others are very bland. Level design needs work as it's hard to know where you're going.

Otherwise shooting mechanics are fine and overdosing an enemy is satisfying.

I've not been taken in by any hype. I've only recently got a PS3 and although I've heard of Haze before now I've never really seen any real information about it. The hype the game has received has, unfortunately, got nothing to do with the fact that the game is not that great!

i got this from a friend who sold his PS3 the other day in favour of an xbox 360 elite, for nothing i can't complain. with all the horrific reviews its got and how bad everyone is saying it is on here, i must admit im finding it hard to see whats actually SO bad, granted its not the best game by any respect, niether are the graphics the best, but compaired to crysis on PC all console graphics are abit half-arsed, gameplay feels very original halo at times and thats not a bad thing at all, nectar is well...alright i suppose, it certainly helps see people that you can't see otherwise, the AI is pretty retarded most of the time, voice acting is nowhere near as bad as people said it was, fair enough sometimes your team-mates sound like complete prats, but there meant to be stimmed up with some sort of drug, i mean how coherant and 'cool' is anyone gonna be when on heroin for example, not very. graphics are IMO similar to resistance, though as far as i can tell haze has some nice touches, god rays for example, again though not as good as some games and cool bullet trails, but then what consoles games have exceptional graphics? overall i would give it 6.5/10 proberbly, since compared to PC all console FPS are disappointing but its nowhere close to as bad as i have heard it was, but yes tso far the vehicles are terrible :p

I agree that it's defiantly better than a 4/10 game. More like a 5/10 or 6/10. It should - and could - have been an 8 or 9 though :( You can clearly tell it has/had potential, but it's like they gave up half way through and thought ah what the hell it will do.

4/10 is only just below average (assuming the full 10pt scale is used).

I saw some stats on this once, apparently the mean score given is somewhere around 7, the 1-10 scale is a farce really unless the publication explains what their version means and then with so many different versions it makes a mockery of things like gamerankings and metacritic.

i must say haze feels very much like timeshift (which i enjoyed) minus the neat time abilities and IGN rated timeshift 7.6, even though its graphically rather pants  i reckon they might just have a grudge against haze for some reason or another
