Iiyama XB2779QS or Dell U2713HM for gaming?

Received my Asus PB278Q yesterday and my usual quick scan confirmed no lit pixels and I have not noticed any dead pixels either and back-light bleeding is minimal so very pleased.

These are the setting I am using under User Mode:
64 - Brightness
77 - Contrast
6500k - Colour Temp
2.2 - Gamma
50 - Sharpness
40 - Trace Free
Default - Everything else

It is a keeper but I would like to get colours a little more vibrant and would be interested to know what settings others are using. The Scenery and Theater Modes certainly liven up colour but unfortunately introduce too many other issues to be of any use.
I happily sacrificed the noticeable backlight bleed and slightly more vibrant colours from my glossy DGM IPS-2701 for the improved contrast ratio (deeper blacks), better build quality, better responsiveness and zero dead pixels of the Asus.

You might notice some improvement by using an ICC profile from TFT Central.

I have had the Asus PB278Q (semi-gloss) for a few days now and am gradually getting used to it and have settled on the following settings:
57 - Brightness
77 - Contrast
6500k - Colour Temp
2.2 - Gamma
40 - Sharpness
40 - Trace Free
Default - Everything else

My Hazro HZ27WA (glossy) is going to a family member who is delighted at the screen size for the discounted price and is not as retentive as me over dust behind the screen

Going from a gloss screen to a semi-gloss screen does take a bit of adjusting and I hooked both up for a side-by-side comparison and these are my observations:
  • Colours are more vibrant on the Hazro (gloss)
  • Text is more pleasing on the Hazro, it just looks better
  • Gamma is spot on the Hazro but slightly off with the Asus with no way of correcting it as only settings for 2.2 or 1.8
  • No dead pixels on either but the Hazro is marred by accumulated dust behind the screen
  • Backlight bleeding is noticeable on the Hazro but almost non existent on the Asus
  • No reflections on the Asus
  • Black level IS better on the Asus in the side-by-side comparison. But strangely enough this doesn't seem to matter when viewing the Hazro as the glossy screen and reflections seems to mask this
  • I asked my wife for her opinion and she said the Asus looks much nicer but also feels the colours looked better on the Hazro

If both screens were perfect I would probably stay with the Hazro, it's such a shame the bezel build quality is lacking as the panel is really very good. I'm half temped to send the Asus back and get the Hazro HZ27WiE 8-Bit 27" on offer here for £299 this week in the hope the build quality has improved enough to stop dust getting behind the screen, although the Hazro customer service should it be needed does seem to be shocking.

I consider myself to be very picky but perhaps I am mellowing because unlike you, I really didn't need to "gradually get used to" the semi-gloss Asus screen.
Perhaps my memories of the vibrancy of my glossy DGM screen have been tainted by the backlight bleed, dead pixels and poor contrast ratio.

I'm sorry that you're not totally happy with the Asus. I feel partly to blame for recommending it in the first place.

I can't imagine going back to a Hazro or a DGM unless I'm desperate and on a really tight budget. The quality control is awful. If the panel doesn't have a problem then the PSU probably will :(
True, if you get a good one then you'll love it but I would rather spend more money on a better brand.
Having said that, I always considered Iiyama to be better than DGM/Hazro but those 2 monitors I had to return over Christmas were a lot worse than my old DGM.
Here's hoping the Asus gives me good service for the next 3 years, at which point I might consider moving to a 4K display.

All advice welcome, more than happy with the recommendation, I think glossy vs. antiglare is a sort of marmite thing. What I have learned is glossy is glossy and anything else is closer to antiglare in characteristics for colour vibrancy and text sharpness. Instead of "semi-gloss" the coating should be called "light antiglare".

There is a lot to like about the Asus and the build quality is excellent and I could probably get used to it. Side-by-side though I clearly prefer a glossy screen. A real shame Asus don't do a glossy version of the PB278Q.

Both the Iiyama XB2779QS and Hazro HZ27WiE seem risky propositions though as backlight bleeding is only acceptable to a certain extent.

I mght backtrack and keep the Hazro for a bit longer and wait for a 4K monitor as Dell has already announced 28-inch UltraHD monitor priced at $699. One of my friends has a Mac Book Pro Retina and the screen is fabulous.
