I'm thinking about getting some Ikea Kallax shelving for the office.

It looks like they want you to wall mount it, but I'd be keen to just have it freestanding if possible. If I was getting the 4x4 or 5x5 kallax unit, would it be sturdy enough to not require affixing to the wall?

I'd not be overloading it with stuff tbh, just need something larger to fill up the space.

I have a few of these and just use them freestanding.
Like most things IKEA recommend you secure them to the wall to cover their arse incase they get pulled down on top of someone.

We have a couple of them and more than sturdy enough, its to cover Ikea if a kid or someone gets trapped under one trying to climb it!

I did affix a pine bookcase to the wall as it was much thinner and taller, would have been far easier to topple - would take an awful lot of effort to pull a Kallax over IMO!

Great, thanks everyone!

What about the insert options? I notice you can get some that come with them, some without. I'd assume you can just buy the base unit without any and then add as many as you want.

Yeah, just buy the main unit that you want and then any extra inserts if you need any. Don't think the ones that come with the inserts are any cheaper, just popular options maybe.

Bare ...bear.... in mind that things like the cupboard hinges can reduce the width of what you can get in. We use ours (2x4) for board games and most do not fit with a cupboard attachment.

I'll be using mine for some board games too. My idea was to get some inserts and some without. I don't have a massive collection probably 10 games or so at the moment.

Thanks for the advice though!

Just a note... They do become a little more unstable on carpet if you use them with the feet you can buy seperately. I bought some when i lived in a hardwood floor apartment and stuck them on feet to prevent scratching. I took them to my new place thats got ludicrously thick carpet and they're a touch on the wobbly side.

Without them, they're solid, just like everyone else said.

I would personally fix the 5x5 just for some extra safety. Also important to keep the centre of mavity as low as possible (heavy items low}

I have recently bought some Kallax shelving for the playroom and my office, and I've fixed them as I have two kids who will no doubt try and use them as a climbing frame sometime!

Really nice product though, I bought some drawer, cupboard and box inserts.

Are these simple enough to wall mount?

Edit: I mean, I'm sure they are, but has anyone done it? What have they used?
