Ikea Markus currently £125 with Family membership

Nice work on what is a very solid work-horse chair.

I used an IKEA Markus as my main office / computing room chair for many years.

The Markus has a lot going for it. It is affordable, and beats (in my opinion) many of the very low quality chairs on Amazon.

When the time comes, it is a good juncture to a higher price point chair (with Herman Miller, Steelcase or Hayworth being the leading brands), should someone be interested in one of those.

My chair journey has went like this:

(1) No-name generic Amazon chair; then
(2) IKEA Markus chair (several versions over the years); then
(3) Refurbished Steelcase Amia chair (whereby I received an imperfect chair from the UK vendor, which I will need to do some work on, hopefully with a worthwhile outcome).

i've had mine for ~8 years and other than the padding having flattened it's still going great..
Same I have the ancient leather one, still looks new apart from the padding, and the gas cylinder stopped holding air.
I'm tall anyway so just wedged its always extended.

I could buy a new cannister on amazon for about 20-30 but can't be bothered.

I'd buy a new one if they still did leather., all the leather still looks good, no splitting at the stitches or anything like that.

cows are going to die anyway, may as well use the skin.

think I paid 100 quid about 7+ years ago

When I got my new one I noticed to my dismay that the arm rests were even worse than my old one as they have now removed what little padding was there and now it is hard rubber.
you couldn't just attach your old arm rests?

the original leather ones the arm rests don't seem to have any padding and are still comfortable some 10 years later

The originals weren't great in the first place but still better than the new ones. Plus my son, who took my old Markus chair would have had a few moans about me swapping the armrest so that it was even worse. ;) My original leather armrests do have a small amount of padding but that is totally gone in the new chairs.

I was always minded to do something about the original armests which were always the poorest thing about the chair but never got round to it, so seeing that the new chair's armrests have regressed it was the kick up the backside I needed.

My custom armrests are now so much more comfortable and much more ergonomic, i.e. when using a mouse, they really put the original ones in the shade.
