IKEA Markus

Looking at the specs they use cold foam for the seat cushion, so it surprising that people are finding it deteriorates in a short space of time. That's usually the case when a low density sheet foam is used, which some of the cheapo chairs do use. Cold foam is designed for heavy use seating and should last a long time.
 
Someone recommended the Markus to me when I was looking for a chair maybe 3/4 years ago now. Sat on it and told them to foxtrot oscar and went and bought a Staples Kashmir chair.

Still comfortable although the padding in the arms has gone :(
 
well my chair didn't arrive yesterday, but it's coming today instead

Company offered me £30 refund and added on the lumar support in way of an apology. Not bad, as all in this chair has cost me £300 inc vat and postage.
 
I've got a Kinnarps plus[8] at work. The most comfortable chair i've sat on, can easily sit for hours at a time.

Can't seem to find a price online though, and the select few sites that do sell them are all price request and get a representative to phone you. I think i've seen a slightly different model offered on one of these second-hand office furniture sites for about £800! :O

Easily the best chair, you simply can't compare it to the Markus

that does look like it's in good condition. I've had a look at their range and thought they were a little expensive after VAT+delivery, but they do seem to be properly restored.

Very nice and £300 is a super price for that sort of quality.

Personally I'd take the arms off, but that's just my preference.
 
I sat in an Aeron at a John Lewis store. The backrest felt a bit small too me (I'm 6'2), maybe I should be look at an Embody instead.

They come in different sizes, the one you tried in store may have been a small or medium. Also you need to set up the balance or the chair and the position of the backrest to suit you.

Edit: The embody does look good though but accodring to one site:

The arms are pretty good to be ho eat. They're very easily height adjustable and they swing in /out too so you can set them up to not foul your desk. My two Markus chairs have the arms off as they don't fit under the [Ikea] desk lol.

There's a size chart o. The HM site.
At 6-2 you may need the size C chair, but I'm not 100% sure of that.
 
ok, so I've used the chair a fair bit over the weekend and my thoughts are......meh!

It's ok, it is better than the Markus, but it's nowhere near as good as my old one (£80 from the purple shirt shop). It's just not comfortable. Ok, it looks amazing and everything can be adjusted, but I really miss my old chair. To be honest, the temporary £30 special I got from the local supermarket is comfier.

Perhaps I need to get used to it? but after 30mins, my backside and back of legs have gone to sleep. That can't be right can it?

I have quite a bit of programming to do tonight, and I'm sat on the £30 one lol

There is something wrong with you.

I have multiples of these in my house, plus I bought myself and my 10 strong team of admin one each. Everyone loves it.

You're use to cheap ****. It's not your fault.
 
Very weird mate. maybe you just have to get used to it; I too think it's just you...
Their main plus for me is that I can sit on them for absolutely hours on end and not get uncomfortable, or get sore-spots etc, they're like marathon chairs ha.

By the way I don't own one [yet] and have invested no money in one but I use one at work [Aeron B, fully loaded, posture fit] where I sometimes sit in it for 10+ hour stretches with no discomfort at all. I have Markus chairs at home which I can't sit in for more than a couple of hours - but I have to.

Casting my mind back to day1 at work over 3 years ago I remember thinking they were a bit weird as they had no padding as such; I hadn't realised I was sitting on a £1200 chair at the time.
 
I do remember it being mentioned in previous chair threads that the hard front edge of the Aeron can cut off circulation in your legs. The good news is these chairs hold their value so you can easily sell it on for minimal if any loss.

Ah, this might be an issue for me. I have nerve damage in my leg from a motorbike accident ~7 years ago. Guess I'll keep looking
 
John Lewis sometimes have Herman Miller chairs in their department stores that you can try.

I remember seeing them one time when wandering through the store and thinking WTF, what kind of crazy markup are JL playing at? This was before I realised who Herman Miller were and their chairs are so renowned.

I'm currently using a £42 shipped Berlin chair from Viking Direct. Not bad for the price. My first one lasted quite a few years, but my second one lasted less than a year in terms of wear on the padding on the arm and all the fake leather padding flaked off.

I think I'm going to plan and to save up and get a Herman Miller one after some of the good stuff I've read about them.

EDIT: I tried the Markus in Ikea on Saturday. Seems okay, hard to get a real feel for it when only sitting in it for a few minutes. I like the mesh back. I think if I'm going to spend a lot I'm going to try and get one with a mesh seat too to aerate my bottom during the hot summer months. I nearly died last summer in a house with no AC and poor air flow, I had to drape a towel over my fake leather chair and chill out in my boxers just to stop my skin from sealing to the surface, which would force me to peel myself away every time I wanted to stand up or shift position.

Sorry to scar you all with that lovely mental image :D
