IKEA starting selling Solar Panels

Great to see solar becoming more accessible to all

I wonder what the tipping point for solar will be, i don't think it is grid parity (well not for domestic installation anyway). 5k has got to be getting near the point where, its considered a cheap house improvement rather than an investment for fit etc.

I really wish the government would make them compulsory on all new builds the economy's of scale would force the prices down over night but for some reason they are not a building regs requirment. It's a bit like we still build houses without grey water systems and use drinking water to flush the loo and water the garden. All these things are so much cheaper and easier to install at build time and the numbers will bring the price of everything down.

Why is it silly ? :)

You get very little benefit, while someone else does. when it was like 12k it was, now they are half that price, you might as well do it yourself and actually get the full benefit.

You only get the electricty it makes and you use, so if yo're at work all day, then you wont save much at all.

The way mine works is that during the 'light' times it creates 'light' into electricity and then it goes into a 'feed in' meter and when I come home it starts to eat into it. Anything left goes back into the grid and sold on.

This reduces the bills between 25% > 70%....

what more do you want when it's a free install?

If you pay for the solar panels how many years will it takes to actually pay them off?.....

Yes it can also depend how much you are in the house but if you aren't in then you shouldn't have much of a big bill anyway...

Most people are not in the house duruing the day, so there bill for the day light hours is extremly low. Making these schemes pretty redudent. As you only get what you use, the compnay fitting them gets the fit and any sold to the power company.
Not being n durying day liight hours, does not mean you should or would have a small bill.
With the price being slashed it should pay off in 7 years, if you purchase it yourself.

However if you don't have access to £5/6k to purchase one right now, then this is a great alternative, it costs nothing and saves you money (wether that amount is £1 a month is irrelevant as the install is free)
