I was asking about which flight si to get a few days ago and was recomended IL2 as a good combat flight sim in which to fly and fight in old WW2 planes.

I have been looking around for prices and it seems to be stupidly cheap (£4) most places but this is for IL-Sturmovik.

Is this just an expansion? If so what is the full game? and if not why is it soooo cheap?

It's been out a long time.

It is a great sim but has a steep learning curve, be prepared to spend a long time learning all the commands.

There are add ons too.

Hmmmm Maybe IL2 isnt what I am looking for either, I guess I am looking for something that is between this and BF1942 spitfire flying.

I want it to look and feel realistic without having a steep learning curve or having to memorise tons of buttons.

If you want to play the most up to date version(s), then get IL-2 1946 as it contains all of the addons that you will need to play online.

The original IL-2 was just a single game and had no expansions, and was released about 2001 or so iirc. IL-2 1946 contains the sequal (IL-2 Forgotten Battles) as well as all of the smaller expansions that come with it. All you need to do is patch up to the latest version and you have the best WW2 CFS around. :)

Sounds good, but I am not after a steep learning curve, I dont generally want to be controlling flaps, comunicating with the tower, having to make perfect approaches etc as this brings me no joy.

I do however want to fly realistic looking wwII planes over good scenery while blowing the hell out of the enemy, so is this game for me?

Bearing in mind I am selling FSX again as it wasnt my cup of tea.

You can set the level of realism and those only really apply if you plan on playing the game online, since there is a decent community for the game apparently. I think the game has good graphics for its age but it might be getting a bit dated now.

IL2 is very adjustable in the difficulty aspect, it will be just fine for you on easy settings.

Haven't come across a combat flight sim with decent scenery yet. Slows down the action too much probably.

Here's a shortlist of ones that I have owned:

Il2 1946 or Forgotten Battles. Hardcore. Be prepared to be shot down regularly. Slightly lacking in atmosphere. Good flight model, and plane graphics. Poor to average terrain graphics.

Rowan Battle of Britain 2: Hardcore. Be prepared to be shot down regularly. OK atmosphere. Good flight model, and plane graphics. Reasonable terrain graphics. Copes really well with large furballs involving dozens of aircraft. Real sweaty palms stuff. Comes with a strategy level campaign, though I found it a bit boring.

Combat Flight Simulator 3: Average difficulty. Totally lacking in atmosphere. Poor campaign. Good flight model, and plane graphics. Reasonable terrain graphics. Binned.

Combat Flight Simulator 2: An old game (c10 years). Easy to average difficulty. Great atmosphere and campaign structure (based in the pacific - ie Yanks v Japs). Some fantastic mods. Basic flight model. Low to average plane and terrain graphics at today's level of expectation. A real blast.

So, while hating to be a luddite, but given what the KiD is looking for, I would recommend CFS2 (graphics aside) - if you can find it. Failing that, there are arcade titles about, but I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

Il2 hardcore? only if you choose to fly that way, poor to average terrain graphics?

IL2 online is hardcore. Hardcore for new comers, until it "clicks" of said clickage - there is no way to teach it, you just have to learn.

Thanks for info guys, I think IL2 is the thing I want.

So there seems to be loads of add-ons and stuff for IL2, but they are all silly cheap prices, so what is it I should be getting for the full game?

It's a bit confusing I think to tell what are expansion packs and which is the full game.

Also can I sell my copy of FSX even if I have activated it online?

have you considered battlefield midway, mega plane action!

IL2 Sturmovik: 1946 is what it says ? thats correct yes?

Edit: Oh wait I am a moron :P that £14.99 not £4.99 :p

Agreed. On easiest setting, with the right plane, my 2.5 yr old took off from an aircraft carrier! Was quite stunned myself.

Each plane is subtly different. Terrain graphics aren't that noticable when tailing in a dogfight ;) Far too focussed.

Edit: Check out hyperlobby for multiplayer, but practise first offline with your preferred plane or ask someone to be your wingman to give you tips.
