IL2 ?

Doesn't do a thing for me, I hate satelite image tiles, flat images pasted on the landscape and two plane trees look awful in my opinion. Not to mention how pixelated it looks when you get down in the weeds. But hey, it's all subjective isn't it :)

i've been playing il-2 since dec 2000,not consistently as it is so immersive that burn outs are frequent.
last time i was on hyperlobby i flew 6 missions and felt lucky to survive one.shot down everytime.now i know i'm a bit rusty but my point is that there are an awful lot of virtual aces out there.i reckon it would be one hell of a challenge for a noob to play this competitvely online.the learning curve is very steep, very long and very painful.

Agreed. On easiest setting, with the right plane, my 2.5 yr old took off from an aircraft carrier! Was quite stunned myself.

Each plane is subtly different. Terrain graphics aren't that noticable when tailing in a dogfight ;) Far too focussed.

Edit: Check out hyperlobby for multiplayer, but practise first offline with your preferred plane or ask someone to be your wingman to give you tips.

so you dont notice terrain when on someones 6 ? ever been flown into a hill ? :D

IL-2 1946

Does this have that stupid protection system still. the ace expansion pack i purchased a few months ago has, it will not install if you have dvd copying software on your pc.
This really peed me off.
I love the game but refuse to purchase something that will not install.
Rumour was they have had so many complaints about the protection they removed it.
I need to confirm this somehow.

yeah I thought it was that but when you look at the details abouts IL2 1946 then all it mentions is US, Russian and Japanese aircraft, but does it include the British planes too liek the spitefire etc?

Sorry for all the questions Dano.

Also someone mentioned that I might prefer Combat FLight Sim 2 how do they compare?

:p Many a time, or mis-judged my height

Plenty of time to admire the terrain when flying bombers, and watching your escorts in furballs.

Edit: You've got Spitfire's, Hurricane's, Bristol Beaufighter off the top of my head. Found the hurricane easier when I was starting out.

when you have a nasty on your 6 its a legitimate and well used tactic to use their concentration against them and fly very low and very fast just skimming trees and hills.if they not on the ball then they can misjudge and go in with spectacular results :)
the game was originally purely based on the russian front and was restricted to german and soviet aircraft but because the russians received both British and US planes via lend lease the hurricane,spit,P-51,P-47 etc were gradually added in.
i dont play this as often because its dominated by forum whingers.each aircraft has its own flight model unique to itself.it was said to be as accurate and realistic as game parameters allowed.when the hurricane appeared it quickly gained uber status because it could out turn any axis aircraft, which was how it was in real life.enter the whinger.big threads on forum running it down, calling it a "noob ride" etc.game developer reads forum, takes note of comments and in the next patch dilutes hurricane performance :( same has happened with spit.
also their have been several addons which have to be bought.but these addons include patches too.i have strong issues with having to pay for a patch which you need to play online.

The stock CSF2 campaign is the likes of Corsairs and Wildcats against Zeros etc. The community, which has obviously dwindled, has produced a mass of excellent freeware addons including spits. Again, it is an old sim, showing it's age here an there, but you can't beat quality. This freeware campaign, replete with new aircraft is, IMHO, the best, most involving, well balanced flight sim campaign that I have played. Beating the socks off anything I've seen with Il2...

And here is a review:

http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/review/p40.htm

You can see the primitive nature of the terrain graphics, but the home built Kittyhawk is very impressives for such an old product...

Hides under the parapet awaiting Dano's response :)

1) Find a better group to fly with. I'd suggest one of the bigger online squadrons that fly in hyperlobby would be a good start.

2) Ignore the whiners, it's been proven time and time again that 95% of the time it's the pilot at fault and not the aircraft.

3) Nobody forced you to buy anything, that's your choice as to wether you want the latest version or not, don't even get me started on the amount of freenbes Oleg and Co have given the community during the IL2 series life so far.

Kirth, I can't argue, the only time I ever played CFS2 was very briefly at a firends so I cannot make any sort of informed response other than it sucks in the looks department and we all know that doesn't mean squat in a flight sim :)

Might want to remove those competitor links, besides which that is not the IL2 version you want. IL2 1946 is the one to get in the black and red box.

Excellent have found CFS2 for £3.99 plus £1.50 P&P which means I can get both for £20 anyways..... job done!

Got IL2 on Friday but didnt manage to try it until Sunday.

When the menu's came up for starting the game, I instantly OMG what a pile of junk this looks like, the menu's are awful and look like they were programmed in the 80's, they are ugly and clunky.

Then I started a game properly and wow I can see why the menu looks clunky, they clearly spent all their time making the actual game look pretty and play brilliantly :)

I have everything turned up to max and it runs like a dream.

Shot 5 betty's down on my first Sortie too :)

Still getting used to following the required flight paths etc and keep getting shouted at for nto staying with my leader, but hey I am a one man killing machine.

Love it!

They do suck don't they, it's all the double negative switches that are really annoying though.

There are several edits you can make to the conf.ini file which will make it even better, I take it you have 'Perfect' mode running? More details if needed :)

Well, you did say you wanted to play it on easy :)

Flight lead will shout at you for virtually nothing, also be aware that one of the big limitations of IL2 is that all fights sound exactly the same over comms, so when calls are made it may not be at all relevant to your flight.

Glad you're enjoying it, don't take too long before you start cranking up the realism though, else you'll develop lots of very bad habits :)
