Illegal number plates - New DVLA rules

Road Traffic Act.

Whats yours? Oh yea, a random forum.

No need to get sarky. Any bits of the RTA particularly pertinent that you'd like to quote?

I might be wrong and this all be a hoax, but you're not doing anything to convince me to change my opinion.

I don't know why more cars don't simply get confiscated by the police and sold at auction.

1st offence a warning and proof. You could even use the mot proof system they have for broken lights. 2nd offence you loose your car.

I can't see why it would make a difference to ANPR, the software will be advanced enough to read almost anything, or should be. It's basically similar to what's used by iPSL or whatever the main UK clearing house are calling themselves in Banking - handwritten stuff gets read even though some people's writing is utterly terrible. A plate that's just spaced differently will easily be read, as will one in italics or on different colour backgrounds.

They need to concentrate on un-roadworthy crap before mincing on about bloody numberplates. Oh, but that means actually investigating and also means pulling people who might not have any money to pay the fine.

Copied off another forum, not sure if it's true or a hoax, but I'd love it to be true, Illegal number plates are one of my pet hates.
If it is true, a quite excellent idea.

Hopefully they will do the same sort of thing with cars that are uninsured, haven't got a valid tax disk and/or haven't passed an MOT test :)

I think the idea is that you'd get a different registration mark, so you'd need to get new plates.
Wouldn't that be a massive hassle for both the owner and the DVLA? What's to stop someone doing this to reregister stolen or written off cars?

I do agree with the idea tho, I'm sure there's a better way of going about it tho. :)

plates should be supplied by the govt like they are in the rest of europe. problem solved.

Plates should not be stupidly sized using stupidly large font - problem solved.

Should use Aussie style/size plates.

And should not use front license plates so that they do not mess up airflow on intercooled cars.

My elderly neighbor had normal plates from the dealer he bought the car from about 5 years ago, he just failed his MOT because the plates were "against new legislation" and they made him pay for a new set with a blue flag on the left. He asked for the old plates so he could check with the police and they had "thrown them away".

Could somebody confirm that he was swindled? What legislation could have come in to invalidate his plates as these plates were legit plates on an 54 reg octavia....

Sounds odd to me. The Blue Euro flag isn't compulsory - I don't have it on my 05 Megane, nor do I want it!

The standard applies to cars registered from 2001 and I'm sure that the dealer wouldn't supply a car with illegal plates

Here's the standard from the DVLA (pdf): http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/v796.pdf

Front plates should be optional, I for one drive around with no front plate and because I am so gangster no one ever pulls me over.

(am fully aware I will now get pulled over twice having posted this the next time I take my car out)
