Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I was around here, and the small knowledge I had learned when I was around has all been outdated so need a hand, or atleast a few suggestions for upgrade. :D Or maybe a whole new rig, part from the case.

The other day my Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller started messing about with me, making my Internet connection seem like a 56k one. To make it work properlly I have to uninstall it and then restart my PC when I first start it up, then it working as it suppose to. Have updated it to the latest version but still not working ok. Only been for a couple days but still tiresome to do each time I start up the PC. :o

So, since I been thinking about doing a upgrade I though I go ahead and do that since seems it's needed. :o Just needed an excuse I guess... lol

I have a Silverstone TJ-09 which I am happy with. Then inside has;
ASUS P8P67 Deluxe
Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon HD 5770
ASUS Xonar D2 (keeping this)
Intel i5-2500 3,30 GHz
Plextor DVDR PX-800A and PX-891SA (keeping these)
Corsair HX750 PSU
Corsair DDR XMS3 Vengeance 1600 MHz CL9 2x4gb memory
And have for now 2 Dell U2412M 24'' screen and 1 NEC MultiSync 24WMGX3 (probally be switching the NEC for a 3rd Dell later though)
And a bunch of HD's but going to upgrade to SSD so they will just end up as Storage HD's.

Now, I am not playing Crysis or anything similar but more along the lines of Civilization V so it's not going to be top of the line gaming PC but would like it to last me a couple years, bought the present motherboard about 3 ½ years ago. And I am using Win7 64bit OS, and like to run it in raid 1 so need 2 SSD's, maybe around 250gb or so. *shruggs* Don't really know much about SSD's though but been suggested worth upgrading to them nowdays.

If I can keep anything of the above, would be sweet, but if you have suggestions for all new hardware, that is all good too.

On a side note, I noticed that sometimes there is a "flicker" across my screens, especially if I start playing something from YouTube or similar, no clue why but guessing either graphic card or PSU ?? The PSU I have is less then a year old but if I need a more powerful one I change it. :D

Ahh right, budget might be good to maybe. Uhmm around £1,300 max I think is doable.

Looking forward to your expert insights and to spend some coins on new PC stuff. =)

PS. Sorry for such a long post though. :o

Is your current cpu the non 'k' version ? If it is the 2500K then it is still a good cpu.

You wouldn't see a huge difference between a stock i5 2500 and a stock current i5 cpu.

Your ram and power supply are both good, so no need to change those. The other parts you have highlighted as well are also fine.

So depending on your current cpu, you could be looking at a new graphics card and a couple of SSD's for starters.

If you needed a new cpu then you could go for an i7 4770K, or wait for the upcoming haswell refresh cpu's which are due around the middle of June.

Thank you for your replay, appreciated. :D

I am guessing it is a non "K" version, all it says on Computer properties is "Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500 CPU @ 3.30GHz".

I could wait for CPU I guess, normally like it all in one go though. And since the built in Ethernet seems to be messed up I do need a new motherboard, hence why thought I change it all at one time. :o

Would it be a big difference with the i7 4770K you recommend compared to the upcoming Haswell's CPU's ??

Its still all pretty good to be fair, if it was me I would get an SSD and a new GPU, which should sort out your flicker. Then see if your happy with it, if not then get a new CPU and mobo, shame you didnt get a 2500k so you could overclock it, then you would have no issue.
Your PSU is more than enough!

If you don't want to overclock your pc, then you could just replace the motherboard and keep your current cpu.

Something like this would support your current cpu.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z77-DS3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £47.99
Total : £57.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If you want the ability to overclock then you would need a 'k' cpu. In that case then you would probably be better moving to the current 1150 cpu/boards, as the 1155 cpu's are still around the same price as current ones.

Only £4 between the older 1155 and current 1150 cpu's

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £173.99
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £169.99
Total : £353.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The upcoming Haswell refresh 'k' cpu's will be slightly faster than the current ones, and will also be easier to overclock/run cooler.

The network adapter above would be worth trying first of all, before committing to a new board.

TP-Link Gigabit PCI Network Adapter
£6.98 inc VAT

This will fix your net problem. ;)

Ding dong !!

No clue whatsoever why I didn't think of a seperate Networks Card :o

Thanks for splendid suggestion, I will try that first ! :D

Thanks for your suggestion, I will try the adapter first and then probally come back for some suggestions on mobo, CPU, SSD and GFX once the new Haswell is out.

If the adapter for some reason wont work, then I do a Terminator ... I be back ...

Ok, I am back .... but not due to the Network Adapter, it's working just great ! :D

I been reading around a little and also seen a link that the new Intel CPU's might not be coming until September but saw it was unconfirmed information (link was in one of the posts in this part of the forum, forgot which one). BUT the main thing is, if I understood right from other posts here, the new CPU's is mainly good for overclocking, so if I am not interested in that then my present CPU should still be ok ?? Since lee32uk mention the Haswell refresh 'k' cpu's is only slightly faster, so guessing there isn't actually gonna much of an improvement at stock speeds ??

If so, then just needing a new mobo, maybe there is one that can take my present CPU and be used for the new Haswell's on a later date maybe ? And then SSD's and a GFX that can handle 3 24'' monitors without problem. Something that will last a goodly time. Presently have AMD but had Nvidia in the past so not to fussed which one really.

One small notion though, my present mobo has 8 SATA ports, so if the new one could have that, or more if that's possible, would be very helpfull since all 8 is used right now. :o

Thanks for all your helpful inputs so far! :D

No you can't get a motherboard that will take your processor and a Haswell I'm afraid. So you will have to get the motherboard and processor at the same time if you decide to change.

Thank you, good to know that. =)

I was just browsing around in the shop, looking for a board that can take my CPU and realized the LGA 1155, it aint that many of those around. So might switch to a 1150 instead and new CPU at the same time.

Your basket
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-04-40G) £379.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming G1 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £259.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4690 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £161.99
2 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £239.96

Total : £1,051.52

Question is if it is worth it though, new CPU I mean. The main reason would be due to the lack of SATA ports in the 1155 boards, only 6 on them. This one has 10 but could do with 8 if those couple boards that has 8 would be a better choice then the above one ?? The thing is I do need a new mobo (and preferablly minimum 8 SATA ports, since I know I be using them all), so would be greatful to know if it would be worth it with a 1150 instead of a 1155 and if a 1155, is there a internal expansion card or similar if one need more STAT connections inside the PC ? And I picked the CPU since it slightly faster in spec's then my present one at 3.3GHz (only reason I chose that one, if any other i5 would be a better choice I be more then happy to switch. :) Just think a i7 would be to much for my needs.. lol ).. Ohh and I am not into overclocking so no need to consider that asspect of it. =)

The GFX might be overkill but I do like the silence of a Vapor-X and maybe the R9 270 would be enough for my needs, which is basiclly to support 3 x 24'' monitors without getting any occassional flicker across the screens ?? Since I am not doing any heavy gaming, like Crysis or similar, just old fashion Civ V and similar games. =) (and as long as my PSU is able to support the card ? lol .. Which is a Corsair HX750)

In regards to the SSD's, I have no clue if Samsung are good there, just know it's is a good overal brand, so fell free to swap them out if needed for another brands, just would prefer minimum 250gb though.

The pricetag above is ok, but wouldn't mind if it could be chopped down somewhat, since the spare money will be going for a new Dell U2412M and the less I spend on the above, the faster I can buy the Dell.

Sorry if I'm being a pain but with my present mobo being funky would really appreciate any suggestions before it decide to do a total breakdown on me. :o

Thank you for taking the time reading this and for any suggestions to improvments to the above spec's. :D
